midwestchick Posted February 16, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 16, 2016 We are first time cruisers on Princess cruise lines, sailing on Star Princess. We are in cabin C714. As I mentioned in another post, I can't seem to find a lot of information on here about the Star. Is there a reason this ship doesn't seem to be as popular as some of the other ships? Can anyone give me any pointers as far as the ship, main dining rooms, etc. Any and all information would be appreciated. We are anytime dining. From what I can tell, there is more than one main dining room. How do you decide which one to go to if this is correct information.
Potstech Posted February 16, 2016 #2 Share Posted February 16, 2016 (edited) Each evening you will recieve a Princess Platter that while tell you all about the next day happenings. On the back page will be a listing of ALL dinig venues and their hours of operation. Pick either ADR and go there when you want to eat. If you see a line or are told it is full go to the other one. Which cruise are you on? Alaska? What time frame? Also look in the Roll Call section for the one specific to your cruise and join it just, like you did here. The other members will either have similiar and wide ranging questions or be able to provide answers to those questions. I hope you get the information you want and have a great first cruise experience so you want to go on many more. I actually started our roll call some months ago but there isn't a lot of activity yet. I'm sure it will pick up as time passes and I think there is still a lot of availability on our cruise. We sail from Vancouver on October 9 for 10 nights. It's a California Coastal cruise, one that I've wanted to do for some time. This is a 10 night cruise so I'm also wondering if they still have 2 formal nights and how strictly they adhere to them. I know some cruiselines are beginning to move away from the very formal nights.
Kamloops50 Posted February 16, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 16, 2016 There will plenty of time for two formal nights . The first full sea day and the second to last probably will be formal nights. You can book a specialty restaurant or eat in the Horizon Court if formal dress up isn't your think.
Cruisin' Chick Posted February 16, 2016 #5 Share Posted February 16, 2016 One place that will have plenty of info is the Princess website. It will tell you the different dining venues on board the Star as well as other info (find the Cruise Answer Place on the site for general info you'll need to know). Our first Princess cruise was on the Star when it was relatively new in 2003 (after several Carnival cruises, it was wonderful to try out Princess and our following cruises were on this line). I don't mind formal nights but know some lines are getting away from them. Do a lot of male pax wear tuxedos or do more wear nice suits? I'm uncertain about the demographics on this cruise. I'll check out the cruise answer place...thank you.
shredie Posted February 16, 2016 #7 Share Posted February 16, 2016 At the top of the Princess forum is place where you can select a ship and see the posts about it. I like the Star.
Astro Flyer Posted February 16, 2016 #8 Share Posted February 16, 2016 I've enjoyed sailing the Star twice on month long cruises & primarily book my cruises based on itinerary & secondarily on the ship.

You'll see a range of attire from a few tuxes through suits through slacks and sport coat to slacks with dress suit and tie, etc. Ladies will range from cocktail dresses to nicer dresses to slacks and sparkly blouse... paul929207 Posted February 16, 2016 #12 Share Posted February 16, 2016 We sailed for 35 nights on the Star and loved it. It was Buenos Aires to San Francisco. This July we will be back on her from Whittier to Vancouver
Princess Rhonda Posted February 16, 2016 #13 Share Posted February 16, 2016 I haven't been on the Star, but did the California Coastal and Ruby last year. I hope your weather is as wonderful as ours was! We loved it! A great alternative to the formal nights is the specialty restaurants. We did that last year on one of the formal nights. We didn't have any trouble getting in (probably because it was formal night) and thoroughly enjoyed it! We did both the Crown Grill and Sabatini's on that cruise. Enjoy! midwestchick Posted February 16, 2016 Author #14 Share Posted February 16, 2016 I expect our weather may be a little cooler since it will be October. I've been reading about the many dining venues. I remember reading how good the pizza is on Princess. We'll definitely give it a try. The specialty restaurants are reasonably priced compared to Celebrity. I'll have to read about shore excursions. We usually plan private excursions and get people from our roll call to join in. Maybe it won't be necessary on this cruise.
RetiredNTraveling Posted February 16, 2016 #15 Share Posted February 16, 2016 We sail the Star in 2012 RT to Alaska and loved it. First time on a big ship, other had been on the Sun. We have booked our next cruise on the Star out of Vancouver to Hawaii and are excited. Like someone stated, it's all about the destination before the ship. Roll Calls are strange things! Some of them take off and develop a life of their own. Others linger and linger, almost dying from lack of interest. So don't let a poorly posted RC dampen your spirits. Just keep the faith and enjoy the cruise! ;) Just Mike

Our August cruise has a very slow roll call also...as a rule there isn't anything that can dampen my spirits when it comes to vacations. 😉 Oh wait, maybe disembarkation. 🤔

Yes we are flying in the day before the cruise and will be staying at the Pinnacle Hotel the night of April 28th just a short distance from where the ship docks at Canada Place. This is our second cruise to Hawaii and we are sooooooo looking forward to it. We are booking a later afternoon Vancouver Limo tour (3 hrs) prior to having dinner at Joe Fortes. This is our 1st time to Vancouver so we decided to take a tour and hit a highly recommended restaurant. Just Mike

It's built beside the Canada Place cruise pier (almost on top) . Easy elevator ride to the terminal. They have specials for the Alaska cruise passengers .
