Corkage Question

My husband is an exotic beer fan-- maybe the term "beer snob" would be more appropriate. He loves unusual beers, and they don't offer these onboard any ship we've been on. He'd like to bring a bottle of his favorite ale along and have it with his dinner one evening. The bottles this particular type of ale come in actually look more like champagne bottles than beer bottles. Does anyone have any experience with attempting to bring a bottle of something like this in their carryon? And do you think they'd charge a corkage fee to open it (it does have a cork-- held in with twisted wire, kinda like champagne) at dinner? He's certainly capable of opening it himself.

If it were, say, Budweiser, I'd forbid him from doing anything so tacky. But it's certainly in another class...

I'd love to hear opinions-- but I'd especially love to hear similar experiences.

Shelli,
We brought wine onboard and they charged us $10 for corkage. It was not a problem.

Thanks, Sally-- but my question is about beer.

Hi Shelli;

Princess only "allows" wine and Champaign to be brought on board for consumption in the dining rooms. That being said, I think if brought discreetly to the dining room, it would be handled just like a bottle of wine. We are all "capable of opening our own bottles" The corkage fee will apply and should not be a problem for anyone who chooses to bring a "special bottle" to a fine restaurant.
(Depending on your wait staff, you may or may not actually be charged the fee, currently $10. If you are not charged, increase your waitstaff tip appropriately)

Does your husband enjoy Chimay? I think it could be treated exactly like wine, subject to corkage at the waiter's discression. Princess would likely have no objections to your bringing it on board.

Completed:

Coming up:
Tahitian Princess Oct 14/04
Caribbean Princess redux 6/25/05

I just asked him and he said, "Yeah, Chimay is good-- I have a bottle in the fridge [meaning his beer refrigerator-- a whole fridge devoted to beer in the garage] now."

Thanks, Rob.
