Cash On Board Account

Recommended Posts

I am sailing on Grandeur of the Seas tomorrow! I am doing a cash account as I had a bad experience with a credit account before. Anyway, so I have to go to the front desk when I arrive and give them cash? Or do I just pay for it at the end?

If I am just paying for it at the end and don't want my card on file, can I pay with a card at the end?

Thanks!

They usually have you put $500 up and if that becomes low they will ask for an additional amount generally around $500. Another way you could do it even with providing a Credit Card, is on the final night of the cruise, get a copy of your bill and pay with cash. You can at anytime ask for a copy of your bill or check on your TV to see your expenses.

You either have to have a card on file or cash on deposit day 1.

I read on a couple boards on here that they extend $500 credit before they require you to pay down your account?

Is this true?

As a cash account versus a credit card on file you have to have the $500 on account to cover any charges. As posted when that is depleted it needs to be renewed.

I just called Royal Caribbean three times. The first time I was informed that $500 would be required for a cabin of 2 at check in and would be refunded at end of cruise.

The next two calls said no cash deposit was required and of the cruise is 3-6 days they allow $300 of spending before requesting you to pay down and if it is 7 days or more they allow $500 before they require you to pay down your account.

Can anyone who recently has been help with this?!

Thanks

We have done cash accounts the last few cruises due to a favourable exchange rate and wanting the ability to withdraw cash from the casino without paying the 5% fee.

You DO NOT have to put any money down on your account. Royal will allow you to charge up to $500 before asking that you pay down the balance.

You can set this up when you complete your on line check in and even if you gave a credit card during the on line check in you can change it to a cash account when checking in at the pier.

Okay! This is what I have seen. Now stupid question. The only people I see on here who have said what you said are not from the US. Does that effect it?

No your nationality does not affect this. The last 2 reps at Royal gave you the correct answer. ( They are doing good tonight...2 out of 3 gave you the right answer)

Thanks Ken for clarifying this and correcting me. I knew of the $500 amount prior to pay down but thought it had to be secured.

I have elderly MIL & aunt traveling with us.

previously on another cruiseline she put $300 on her account and then when she didn't spend it they told her they will mail her a check for the difference. It took a long time and we had to call about it so it was a hassle.

Also, I hate to have to get in line at guest relations to deal with this.

Could they use a pre-paid credit card instead? Gratuities are prepaid, so honestly their spending will be limited.

It would be nice if they could just pay it at the end of the cruise.

Based on the response by the one rep at Royal I wonder if in the past they did ask for the security deposit. March 2015 was the first time that we did the cash account and have done it since, unfortunately Royal is no longer offering the favourable exchange rate so it's back to the credit card account for us.

There was no deposit required on Radiance in July 2016. Hopefully if they DO make a policy change they will notify us so those of us used to not having to put anything down can be prepared (yes, I will have money with me, but I don't plan on using much more than my OBC and ergo should not need to even come close to the $500 before paydown).

I sailed HAL 2 summers ago to Alaska, and they DO require a deposit in theory (I say in theory because while I did go to guest services and put the deposit down, the girl at the desk said "You can leave less or just pay it as you go if you want." So I guess in theory I would have been ok without leaving anything - or they would have found me and requested it). It was not a problem to get the cash back the final night - not a huge line as I went during second seating of dinner. The only glitch was the girl who closed me out forgot to click the closed button so I got the BUZZ rather than the DING when trying to leave and I had to go back to the desk for someone to click "closed" on my account.

I have no intention of sailing HAL again (multiple reasons, this bit was a tiny drop in the bucket), but when I close out my account on any ship on the final night, I make sure they click what they have to then and there.

Currently on a back to back on Brilliance with a cash account. No there is no deposit required. On the 5 day cruise credit would be extended to $500; this 4 day cruise it is up to $300. They send a letter in the middle of the cruise stating your current balance and if any payment needed before the end of the cruise. Easy to settle up with cash or credit card the last night.

As mentioned she doesn't have to put any $ down, but if she does and then doesn't spend it all they will give it back in cash at guest services. I have had this happen.

LIKE!

As Ken posted -- set up your account as 'cash' when you check in. You will normally have up to day 3 (unless you start pushing the $$ higher than anticipated) to put any money down on your account.

Have a Great Cruise!!!

Another person who recently had a cash account. Freedom, 3/20 cruise.

Cash account online, kept it at checkin. They extend $500 credit without you putting down ANY money. Once it starts getting close to that they put a note on your door. With us it was when we were merely halfway there (though to be honest we had already used $300 OBC and so had gotten to $250ish beyond that, so it wasn't just $250 LOL).

Super easy.

Last night we paid it to zero with cash, then put down a card to cover the last night's Ben&Jerry's and beer. Easy.

(and our honeymoon cruise on Radiance in '03? No cash required then, either, until later in the cruise, as far as I recall!)

Have had cash accounts for years - never asked for cash upfront.

A few times in the past when using a credit card, I had a nil balance when leaving the ship and suddenly a few weeks later, lo and behold a small charge appeared on the cc. Not worth the 'phone calls and aggro to sort it out.

Therefore, I now run a cash account.

P.S. We never use the minibar!!

Yes..you can charge up to 500 before giving them any money. I just did a cash account on Grandeur in January. I did give them some money, but was told it was not necessary. They did send me a letter part way through reminding me to be sure to settle my account...I did not spend much and they gave me the rest back in cash.
