midwestchick Posted April 17, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2016 I saw on itinerary on the Infinity and was thinking about swapping our Princess cruise. Then I found some really bad reviews about the ship. Horrible guest relations, smoking in cabins, balconies, etc., and nothing being done. The reviews don't sound like the same cruise line. Who has sailed on Infinity? Please post your opinions, since I'm thinking of changing my cruise tomorrow.

Xfedcruiser Posted April 17, 2016 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2016 I also have cruised the Infinity, most recently 2 months ago. I would not hesitate to cruise on the Infinity again. It was clean, staff was friendly, food was great. For every person who has had a neighbor who smoked on the balcony, there are probably 1000 who had neighbors that didn't smoke. When we did have a neighbor who smoked, we called guest relations, and security went to their room. The smoking stopped. If you see an itinerary you want, go for it. Don't be turned off by a few bad reviews when there are many more good reviews.
4774Papa Posted April 17, 2016 #4 Share Posted April 17, 2016 We have done four cruises on Infinity. The last one was January 2014 Around the Horn of South America. It was a great cruise, but we had some neighbors that insisted on smoking on their balconies. We had 7171 and the occupants of 7169 and 7167 that were upwind of us persisted in smoking. I reported incidents four times, and saw a lady in 7169 smoking on the balcony and on another occasion, smoke coming from 7167. The Housing Manager took care warning the people (by the way, they were speaking German, not sure where they were from). After about five days, the smoking stopped, then about three days prior to the end of the cruise, it started back. Again, I reported it, twice more. The housing manager said that they could fine the individuals a couple of thousand dollars, but they didn't have enough proof. I mentioned that I saw the one woman smoking. Apparently, that was not enough. I think it was near the end of the cruise and Celebrity didn't want to fine them on the last day or two of the cruise. We had never had this problem before on Celebrity. You get a different mix of passenger depending on your cruise. The Around the Horn cruise tends to include South Americans and lots of Europeans. My sense is that smoking is still more popular in some parts of the World. Some just don't want to give it up, even on their balcony.

We sailed on the Infinity February-March 2016 South America cruise. The quote above was someone who sailed the Infinity 2 years ago! "Times they are a changin" Most people know where to smoke. There are set places to light up. I never saw or smelled any smoke other than where people were allowed to smoke. There were many different nationalities on this cruise. I believe most of the world knows the rules on ships now and smoke only where they should. The Infinity is a great ship, well kept up. We found the crew to be very friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to cruise on her again.
Rare Deeliteful Posted April 17, 2016 #6 Share Posted April 17, 2016 Cruised on Infinity last year and will be on her again in September. No issues as far as I'm concerned. Staff were great, itinerary was great. No issues with smoking at the aft where I was and have booked the same cabin. Enjoy whatever you choose. Rare ghstudio Posted April 17, 2016 #8 Share Posted April 17, 2016 Always remember that each cruise is different....the folks in the next cabin are different...the folks eating in the MDR and buffet are different and so on. If you happen to have inconsiderate folks next to you who spend the day on their balcony with the door open wide and the TV blaring music or whatever....you will not be a happy cruiser. If you have someone next door who is "Special" and the smoking rules don't apply to them..you will not be a happy cruiser...and so on. Many times I see reports here that really aren't complaints about the ship, but rather complaints about the other passengers and perhaps how the ship didn't handle it as well as they could. Fortunately, most of the time you don't run into those situations...and when there aren't problems, the ship's crew functions better, friendlier...the norm for Celebrity. We've been on the infinity many times including the antarctic last year...very nice ship, very friendly ship, very enjoyable cruise. It's not the ship, it's not the crew...it's generally the passengers that cause things to tilt negatively and cause the negative reports here. midwestchick Posted April 18, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted April 18, 2016 Well said, ghstudio. If the Equinox staff and officers are as friendly as they are on the Summit, we will be more than happy. I tend to ignore inconsiderate people as much as possible. I won't allow them to ruin a vacation.
GottaKnowWhen Posted April 18, 2016 #10 Share Posted April 18, 2016 Thanks for a all the positive feedback. I did a search and learned there was a recent drydock. :D We did the two week Buenos Aires - Cape Horn - Antarctica- Falklands - Argentina cruise February 2015 (while she was an old tired ship according to reviews), then did the 15-night Fort Lauderdale - Panama Canal - Valparaiso Chile cruise in December 2015 (shortly after her dry dock). Love the ship, love the great crew with a wonderful attitude. I could see some changes after the dry dock, but basically she is a well-maintained older ship. Read the bad reviews for their amusement value, and then forget them. Stan

The first cruise through the canal to Valparaiso was wonderful - for us, very 'typical' pleasant Celebrity cruise. The subsequent holiday cruise around the horn had a totally different passenger mix. This cruise was not as pleasant. For the most part, the crew were wonderful. However, Celebrity could have monitored and had better control for a few things. Whenever there was occasion to queue/line up (at guest relations, disembarking the ship, as examples) many passengers felt the line up was not meant for them and they proceeded directly to the front, upsetting a number of guests and creating a lot of tension - particularly as we left the ship in Buenos Aires. Entering the Chilean fjords, viewing the glaciers and actually going around the horn occurred early in the morning - around 6AM. Guest speaker MickeyLive held his Sunrise Club in the Constellation lounge at that time. As we were arriving for these events, security was madly trying to escort very noisy, drunk young adults from the lounge. They were so loud it was impossible to hear what Mickey was saying. Deck 11 outside the lounge was littered with cigarette butts first thing in the morning. We probably won't ever do a Celebrity holiday cruise again, but we are looking forward to being back on the Infinity in May. The around the horn cruise was amazing for scenery, we would do it again, but not as part of a holiday cruise.
pickypicky Posted April 18, 2016 #12 Share Posted April 18, 2016 Just reading these responses reminds me that each cruise is different, and so are we. We were on Jan/Feb. 2016 round the horn and had a great time. We had no issues with inappropriate smoking. We enjoyed the ship, our stateroom, the staff, our food (if I had a quarrel with what I was served, there was always something else on offer), the included beverages, and the itinerary. I would gladly book another cruise on Infinity.
Rare Cruise Raider Posted April 18, 2016 #13 Share Posted April 18, 2016 I've sailed on the Infinity a few times and most recently in Sept 2015, right before the dry dock. Even without the dry dock, I would not hesitate to sail on the Infinity again and again ..... as a matter of fact, have booked a B2B on her for 2017. Feel free to look up the review I did on this ship .... I just love her and have never been bothered by smokers on her. The ship is anything but filthy ... it was even in great shape back before the dry dock.

There's another thread going right now where some of that is discussed. I agree with everyone else, if you have a balcony neighbor that smokes, it seems like smoke follows you everywhere you go. If you don't, you seldom notice smokers. We didn't notice anyone smoking. I had three occasions to visit guest relations, and all three times the reception was nothing less than a snarl. One young fella treated me with such disdain that I noted his name and both left a comment on a written form on board, and again on the survey online. The rest of the service was okay - pretty average cruise ship service. A couple who'd brighten your day, many who just went through the motions, and a few with a chip on their shoulder. It seems that the surveys have really been drilled into them, and a lot relies on your comments on the survey. The service from the room steward and the dining room waiter was less about "let me provide you with excellent service such that it might stand out in your mind to leave a comment on the survey", and more about "DEAR GOD I'LL DO ANYTHING, PLEASE JUST DON'T WRITE ANYTHING BAD ABOUT ME IN THE SURVEY." Ironically, the ass't steward and the ass't waiter were both quite personable and friendly, and both made it in to the survey (and in fact walked away with an extra tip on board). I wouldn't hesitate to cruise Celebrity again, but probably on one of the newer ships.

That was before they changed the restaurants around and added the new "Rooftop Terrace" too, so I bet it's even better now! As for the smoking, I think that doesn't have to do with the ship, as much as the neighbors. Maybe where you cruise makes more of a difference - other places in the world treat smoking with far less disdain than the USA, so maybe it's a matter of certain regions having more rule breakers?
