Scattering ashes at sea

My sister and I are scattering our moms ashes at sea on our upcoming cruise and we are wondering if the paper work that is listed on the FAQs to bring is strictly checked. We have an original copy of her death certificate but not sure we can get the paperwork from the funeral home. To be honest, that entire month is such a blur, neither of us even remembers the name of the place right now.

Yes, you need the documentation. These things are strictly regulated.

The paperwork should have been given to you when you received the ashes. Look at the Death Certificate. It might have the facility's name on it.

Sorry for your loss.

Thanks. :) I only posted the question to see if other people who have made arrangements were asked for their paperwork because it seems with other things, Carnival and/or the port authority can be very lax in our experience.

Hi. My daughter, stepmother and I did my dads ashes 3 years ago onboard the Sensation. The funeral home gave me the box of ashes with the form attached to the top of the box. When I went through security, I explained to the agent what was I the box and no other questions were ever asked.

My dad wanted his ashes in the gulf stream so a day or so into the cruise guest services called us down and we were escorted by an officer and security to the area where we could do his ashes. They told us to take our time and they would wait with us for however long we needed. Lucky they were there because I could not get the bag with the ashes open and luckily the officer/security had a pocket knife and helped me open it.

I was happy to have been able to follow my fathers wishes and Carnival made it so easy. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Karen

You can also arrange for this to be done with a private boat out of Miami or Fort Lauderdale. We just did this exact thing for one of my dear friends last month.

The urn was biodegradable and we threw flowers along with the urn.

You just have to be three miles out and in 1500 feet of water.

Slight threadjack but on topic -

on one of our recent cruises a woman came up to the Serenity deck (this was an aft Serenity location), kneelled down and seemed to be praying - and then opened up a container and dumped out ashes "overboard". I put that in "quotes" because most of the ashes were blown back on board, and there was quite a little pile around the edging below the railing.

Pretty unsettling. Gross, actually.

So don't do these on your own folks!

That's unsettling! :(

I posted on JH's page and he has responded saying he's notified the ship and we just need to go to guest services when we get on the ship.

We have a pink Himalayan salt urn that is sealed with a stopper so no ashes blowing back on the rest of the ship. The entire thing melts when it hits the water.

Thank you all for your replies. Mom made us promise we would do this for her before she passed. <3

No worries. Did my Mom & Dad on the Sunshine last year, all that was required was a biodegrade-able vessel. Carnival was so amazing. Received a letter from the Captain with the coordinates. They were also highly respectful to what we wanted.

Regardless of what Carnival wants, if you are flying to the cruise, you will need the documentation from the funeral home in order to transport human remains across state lines.

It is really very moving. Try and hit Publix for flowers to throw.

First, I'm sorry for your loss.

My family did this for my dad 3 years ago - we had all of the paperwork, but were never asked for it. As others have said, Carnival was wonderful. I had contacted John Heald a few days before the cruise, and he arranged everything. When I got on board, I went to Guest Service, told them who I was and they took it from there. Everything has to be ok'd with the Environmental Officer (I think that's the title) on board, but it was no problem. You tell them the day/time you want to do it, and they will do their best to accommodate the family's wishes.

Someone suggested bringing flowers on board with you, but we ordered roses from Bon Voyage to be delivered to the room - it was much easier than bringing flowers with us.

It will be a very emotional time for you and your family, but Carnival goes above and beyond in situations like this, from my experience.

And now, I, along with some family and friends, are planning to do the same thing for my mom on the Breeze in October. We lost her 3 months ago.

So... your sister is taking your mom on a cruise. NICE!!! :D

(Sorry, but I couldn't resist! My dear, departed mother LOVED to cruise with us when she was among the living. Now, I always know that she is watching us. I'm really sorry for your loss. It's very sweet that you're doing this -- together -- for your mom. Fulfilling her request. God bless all of you...)

Thank you! I figured that would probably be the case. We are still working on getting the certificate from the funeral home but we do have the death certificate. We also contacted John Heald and he said he's taken care of everything for us as well. I'm sure it is something we could have done ourselves but it's nice to have a little help.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I'll post back with my experience on the Breeze for you. Our mom's are going to be Breeze spirits together. :)

Yup! Little sister is still kissing up to Mom! LOL Cruising is the one thing we all three loved to do together and it's just not the same without her. I'm so thankful to be able to cruise with my sister though. Keeping the family tradition alive!

I don't have any experience with this, nor anything to add to the discussion. I just want to express my condolences.

Thank you so much. :)

I am so sorry for your loss, but so glad you posted. I have sat down with my hubby and both of my grown kids and told them that I want my ashes scattered at sea. I will have them read this thread!

I'm so happy you found my post then. :) <3
