Great Way to use your IPhone to make calls/texts FOR FREE While Cruising

Recommended Posts

Saw a Excellent Article on How to be able to make and receive phone calls and texts while on the ship FOR FREE 😃

Want to make and receive calls and text while on the ship? don't want the massive charges? if you get the wifi package and have the latest Iphone now you can.

The latest iphones have wifi calling, its a feature that allows phone calls to be routed via the ships wifi rather than the traditional cellular network ( after all its all just data anyway )

Here is how you do it:

1: go into settings

2: scroll down till you see the phone tab then hit that

3: scroll down till you see wifi calling and turn it on

4: go back to settings and turn on airplane mode ( this turns OFF all the radios in your phone , cellular , bluetooth and wifi )

5: turn on wifi

6: connect to the ships wifi

7: your phone will be able to make and receive calls and texts now.

I have a IPhone 5S and mine doesn't have the Wifi Call Feature 😩😰 but I figured it will help anyone that has a IPhone6 or Android phone that has the feature

You can even test it at home.....Follow the above steps and once you put it in airplane phone make a phone call.....Of course you need to be in a wifi zone w Wifi on........Hope this helps some people.....I know it'll save lots of headaches and money on International phone charges from your carrier

I'm trying this on my cruise in June. I'll try to remember to come back and report. I'm going to try with value plan and see if it works. If not, I may upgrade the last day or two to the highest plan. Leaving hubby at home while DD and I go, so need to check back occasionally. I have the 6+, so I do have the feature.

I used it on the Breeze and it worked great, but I have ATT & an iPhone 6 Plus. I know ATT limits it to iPhones currently. I also used Facebook messenger too!

I imagine you still need to pay for internet access to connect your device to the ships gateway.

Correct. It only worked with the value plan. I used the social plan also and called with Facebook messenger.

Glad to know it worked with the value plan. I got that plan in April and loved it.

if you have a google account, sign up for google voice/google hangout and install the hangout app on your phone. It is another alternative for wifi calling if your service provider dont have it yet

also, facebook and skype have their own app for calling each other too. I used facebook app to call one of my friends over wifi and it worked pretty good.

I have a galaxy s4 but it's through straight talk so it doesn't have the wifi calling feature. I do plan on buying the $5 a day FB data package to keep in touch with DH through fb messaging but a phone call now and then would be nice.

Are you saying you can use that package to make calls? Or are you buying a different package?

Just tried - iPhone 6S 128gb

Put wifi calling on, but after putting airplane mode on and reconnecting wifi, it tells me I need to take off airplane mode to make a call.

Are you sure the setting isn't just to remove the roaming option?

Taking airplane mode back off, "carrier" does show its using my provider via wifi, so think it's working.... Just not sure what the airplane mode on is meant to do?

When you are on the ship you have to have airplane mode on to prevent getting data charges from your carrier.

Go into mobile data and turn off mobile data roaming to achieve that.

I always leave mine on as my provider actually gives me my full unlimited calls and text and 20gb data to be roamed in Europe. Doesn't work when at sea obviously... But even though it connects at times to "3G at sea" I'm told it doesn't use data in the mode. I'd be hit with charges if I made a call or answered one... So just wouldn't do. I wouldn't have use of the ships wifi either... But this method the OP can be used anywhere.

If you install whatsapp (which has the ability to call and is covered by the $5 unless somehow disabled) will all making and receiving calls to those in your contacts with the app.

This is the website info from my provider

http://www.vodafone.co.uk/explore/network/network-improvements/wi-fi-calling

And instructions on setting up Which shows no need to touch airplane mode which I personally found was the case

Airplane Mode with Wifi-On, ensures you are making the call via Wifi and not the cellular network.

Your cell phone provider also must support Wifi calling.

We just pay the $30 (prorated for a week) for global roaming and we can use our phones as normal. Have done for 4 cruises and have paid approx $14 for the 8-12 days we have it turned on. Of course that is times 2 for both our phones.

Forgot to say we have Verizon phone service.

Thanks but no thanks.

I am on vacation. Don't want to be on my phone.

If fact, I leave it locked in the car while on the cruise.

For pictures, I have a small Cannon camera that takes great pictures and video, and was cheap enough (<$100) so any damage/loss would not be a big deal as compared to a $800 iPhone.

Perhaps different phone providers have diffent ways. Mine says airplane mode has to be switched off to make a call. I've done it and it works that way. The link I provided above shows what you need to do and airplane mode isn't used. As mentioned I think you are confusing with mobile data and switch off roaming. And if your carrier is shown as over wifi, that is how your call is routed.

And meanwhile someone breaks into your car at the airport and steals your phone! :D

Never quite understand why someone who is not interested in something has the need to castigate others who do.

Actually thats the same for me too. My provider charges £3 a day to allow your full package to roam, so with 20GB available for me that's a fair chunk of data. No charge if not used on any particular day. That's with Vodafone UK.

However, a biggie for us (and we have 3 contracts with the same in the group).... That charge is only applicable with data. We all have unlimited calls and texts and that is transferable when roaming in Europe for us for free. (That means to UK numbers... So we call call each other are there are zero calling or roaming charges.

We are NOT allowed to call Spainish or Italian numbers for free.... However I already have a workaround which I've used and works fine.

I use a call through company called Localphone. (There must be lots in the US too... And this one works fine for US mobiles too as I've set up for friends when then come to Europe)

I simply add the number on who I'm calling to my account, it gets allocated a UK number as a replacement and then I call that and it's free from my allowance. There is a small charge....to local call, but negligible. I can call the US from Spain and I will be charged 1/2p per minute (about 0.7 cent)

It's always worthwhile at home regardless if you call abroad.

And of course this will work fine with this wifi call mentioned in this post

Gotta love saving money :-)

I agree with badfinger. Better things to do onboard than be on the phone. Look around, and smell the coffee! >_<

The posts you are referencing are OLD, and I was just agreeing with another poster.

It's not too late to make a New Years resolution like,"if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". I did a while ago, are you going to?

Happy New Year! 😎

I completely agree with you about the negative and judgmental comments! Why do they even bother coming to the technology forum? Do they go to the Casino forum and criticize people for gambling? Many of us choose to stay connected and we shouldn't be subjected to the thinly veiled superiority from those who don't.

I have to keep in touch with home while on a cruise. The wifi calling on the 6plus worked wonderfully. Hubby has no clue how to use A smartphone or computer, much less An app, so regular old phone calls are what is needed.

Most places you will be able to get internet free or low cost somewhere near the ship dock. Easiest way is to ask a crew member. They know all of them. Or go on deck and look around. That crowd of people on phones is a clue! Visitor's centers or welcome offices have wi-fi and it is usually posted on the door. Starbucks and coffee shops are good for wi-fi (bathrooms too). Be aware that you must have phone in airport mode while walking around. If you run into a wi-fi spot and your phone is on -- it searches for wi-fi connections. If it finds an open one then all the commercials and FB notices etc come on and use up all your data -- bill bigger than you expect. If you go into settings and select a wi-fi provider, you are on wi-fi and not using your data plan on the phone. If you have a teenage grandkid -- they can teach you everything. If you are 70, like me, I just ask a cute youngun working on their phone to help me get on. They almost always do. If not change seats and ask again!;p It's fun to be a little strange sometimes. Now if I could get the double chin out of the shelfies!

Some folks have family they need to keep in touch with while away. I will enjoy my vacation more knowing all is well back home!
