Rare franski Posted July 3, 2016 #26 Share Posted July 3, 2016 Also if you go to Hospital in the rock, JP gave public transportation instructions on their River Beatrice tour. I found most cab drivers English was not very good. So if you want to go to specific area or place, show them a picture of where you want to go. Take a hotel card in their language. Uniworld's front desk thought I wanted to go to hospital instead of hospital in the rock. By the time they got an English speaking cab, I missed the tour. At Fishermans bastion there was a sign saying Hungarian history in 14 minutes. 3D. Old chapel and go down winding staircase. Wasn't bad. I also had the cab driver come back for me. Depending on where you are staying (and your level of activity) the Hospital in the Rock is quite walkable from the Chain Bridge. If you take the Funicular up - and then walk in the direction of the Fisherman's Bastion... the Hospital is down a set of stairs on your left. You will go down to the roadway below and the entrance is in there. There is signage, but it isn't great. Lots of daily tours. They offer discounts for many things... retirees, members of the forces, health care providers etc. But you need to show proof. I am a nurse, but don't have anything to show that when I travel so paid full price. Fran
foodpolice Posted July 13, 2016 #27 Share Posted July 13, 2016 Spending two days pre cruise Viking Budapest to Amsterdam early August. Can someone who has done this tell us what to see and do in these 2 days? It is our first river cruise. Thanks We just returned (July 11) from our Avalon Budapest to Prague trip. We arrived to our hotel, the Corinithia at around noonish. As our room was not ready, we went for lunch & were in our room by 1:45 PM. We took it easy the 1st day as we had a long flight into Budapest from Vancouver, BC. On the 2nd day, we had an inclusive city tour of Budapest in a comfortable A/C coach with stops at the Fishermens' Bastion & Heroes' Square. This tour was about 3 hours. Upon return to the hotel, we freshened up & took a cab (2000 Ft or Hungarian $) down to the Central Market. Get the front desk to get you the cab. We could also have taken tram 6 which stops in front of our hotel, but then you have to transfer to tram 2, to reach the market. The ticket cost 350 Ft/person/tram, which would have been 1400 Ft vs 2000 Ft for a direct A/C no fuss ride to the market. You can easily spend a couple of hours at this market. If you are into farmer type markets, this is for you. On the 2nd floor of this market, you're in luck if you're a foodie, as there's a lot of kiosks selling street type food. You can easily walk & munch your way to the Chain Bridge from the market. We meandered back to the Corinthia Hotel in about 45 minutes. On embarkation day, we had to check out of the hotel by 11 AM. Our transfer to the ship was at 3:30 PM. You can leave your luggage at the hotel, wander around, take a HOHO bus, have lunch or take an included lunch excursion, as in our case, by Avalon & get dropped off at the ship at 4 PM. In any event have a great time.
texkan Posted August 14, 2016 #28 Share Posted August 14, 2016 We did Budapest post-cruise June 2016. We stayed at Intercontinental Hotel that is located on (Buda side of river). Budapest is an easy city for walking to most sites. http://visitbudapest.travel/activities/fun-things-to-do/castle-hill-funicular/ Have Hungarian currency. Most places take credit cards but some do NOT.
dodger1964 Posted August 15, 2016 #29 Share Posted August 15, 2016 We are just back from Budapest stay. We used AirBnB and we stayed at an apartment for 2 nights that I wish I could live in!! It couldn't have been any better. Located one block behind the Four Seasons hotel which is at the chain bridge for those that haven't been there yet. If we ever go back to Budapest we would stay at the same apartment in a heartbeat! Cheaper than hotel and very convenient!
