hrmkr Posted July 11, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 11, 2016 Wanted to get other's opinions... Is it worth the little bit of money to move up a few decks on the ship? My wife and I are looking at a cruise and we can get the included in the price the Riviera deck. For $1.50 more per person- Main For $4.30 more per person- Upper For $5.80 more per person- Empress I know it is a small amount of money based on the full price of the cruise. Thinking either the Upper or Empress depending on the room location. Thoughts?
Micahs Grandad Posted July 11, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 11, 2016 I dont think so but DW does so we kind of alternate each cruise
Rare sparks1093 Posted July 11, 2016 #3 Share Posted July 11, 2016 I like being fairly close to the water so I don't want to be any higher than Main or Upper (assuming balcony cabin, otherwise it doesn't matter a whole lot).
seamusdad Posted July 11, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 11, 2016 I wouldn't for those decks, but always do for Lido or above. I prefer decks with less cabins they are much quieter in my experience and closer to where I spend my time during the day. ober134 Posted July 11, 2016 #5 Share Posted July 11, 2016 Depends on the ship... I prefer a cabin on a floor between other cabins. In other words, don't want a restaurant, lounge, club or other public place above or below us. We generally try to walk stairs (work off the food ;)) so midship on Empress or similar is my first choice... not too many steps, lol.
bandtaxi Posted July 11, 2016 #6 Share Posted July 11, 2016 We like the lower decks. We always use the stairs and that gives us more steps to work off the ice cream and pizza!
coevan Posted July 11, 2016 #7 Share Posted July 11, 2016 the lower and mid ship are the most comfortable for motion. I never understood why moving up a deck was an upgrade. it's not
crusinpsychRN Posted July 11, 2016 #8 Share Posted July 11, 2016 On Fantasy ships the enter and leave on Empress deck and it's convenient to have a cabin on that floor if you self disembark and don't have to get in an elevator or use stairs. Rare MistyRo76 Posted July 11, 2016 #9 Share Posted July 11, 2016 On Fantasy class ships (including Triumph/Victory/Sunshine), I always liked to book Deck 7. It was between two decks with only cabins so no galley, club, lido deck noise to content with early in the morning or late at night. And it was only a couples decks up or down from most of the entertainment and food. On the newer ships like Breeze and Vista, I actually have found that I like being up higher (Lido or above). We usually get balconies and on these newer ships, they have the outdoor Lanai's that go around the entire ship. If you have balconies on the couple of decks right above the Lanai, it does obstruct your view of the ocean a bit. And I've read that you get more noise from people being out and about during the day. Misty

skywalkr2 Posted July 11, 2016 #11 Share Posted July 11, 2016 I prefer mid ship inside cabins on Riviera. Lucky that it's also the cheapest room on the boat.
PAPERBKWRITER Posted July 11, 2016 #12 Share Posted July 11, 2016 Rivera deck, less movement AND You never have a full elevator to deal with at dinner time. Plus, once you close the door the cabins are all the same.
elcuchio24 Posted July 11, 2016 #13 Share Posted July 11, 2016 It all depends on what is above/below you. We have stayed on deck 6 when there is staff area beneath us, never an issue. We have also stayed on deck 6 above clubs/bars and you could hear some noise for sure. Same with forward on those decks and getting noise from the theater. If we can, we like to be sandwiched between guest rooms, above and below, and amid-ship. That will give you the best chances of a quiet cruise, and keep you within a short walk of everything.:)
CharlesKru Posted July 11, 2016 #14 Share Posted July 11, 2016 For the Fantasy Class Ships ( Which you indicated you are on) they are not that big. I usually book on Main, but that is just because It usually works out.. I agree with other posters, when you get to the larger Dream/Conquest class ships, higher is worth it, as they are really large ships. Walking and stairs are great for offsetting the food I eat, but really it can take forever to go from one side to another and down 4 decks... babygrljaz Posted July 11, 2016 #15 Share Posted July 11, 2016 (edited) Depends on what you like. I personally prefer a lower deck. I take the stairs on the way down, work off a little of what I've eaten. So the farther the walk the better, but that's just me 😊 Edited July 11, 2016 by babygrljaz
Spoot Posted July 11, 2016 #16 Share Posted July 11, 2016 We like the lower decks. We always use the stairs and that gives us more steps to work off the ice cream and pizza! Yep--this is exactly the reason we go low and it saves me $$ [emoji5]
xlxo Posted July 11, 2016 #17 Share Posted July 11, 2016 On other ships I've been on... one deck above the lowest deck gives you a larger oceanview porthole. the lower decks have less side to side rolling motion. mid or aft lower decks get more sea spray lower decks have better elevator access. Elevators are often full when they reach the upper decks close to the dining section. upper decks offer more privacy when in port. Lower decks may be open to the public and/or workers. Please keep your curtains closed. I like the savings on lower decks
SadieN Posted July 11, 2016 #18 Share Posted July 11, 2016 In order, we prefer Main, Upper, Riviera, Empress on the Fantasy class ships. Some cabins on Empress are below the galley, others are too close to the atrium. We avoid cabins near the central staircase area because the casino smoking area is right next to the elevator shaft. Smoke travels down. Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
beachbum53 Posted July 11, 2016 #19 Share Posted July 11, 2016 The opinions for which cabin on which deck are as varied as the people that cruise. Our preference is the Empress Deck, either midship or near the Aft. Only cabins above and below, so there's barely any noise (unless you have noisy neighbors). Since we tend to spend most of our time on the Lido deck, we like to be closer to the Aft elevators. They're generally less busy than the mid or forward elevators. A few dollars more for that deck? Yes, but not that much more, and worth it to us. The last time we had a cabin on the Upper Deck, we were directly above the lounge where they have karaoke on certain nights. It wasn't too bad, for about the first 20 minutes. As the evening progressed, the more people drank, the louder they got, and the worse they got. After that I said "No more Upper Deck for us." It's well worth a few extra dollars to have a quiet location.
hrmkr Posted July 11, 2016 Author #20 Share Posted July 11, 2016 Currently looking at cabin U132 and others a fewer back if this one gets taken. There are cabins above and below so should be quiet. This cabin is 4 or 5 cabins back from the mid elevators.

lizzyplague Posted July 11, 2016 #22 Share Posted July 11, 2016 We've always been on the Main deck middle with no complaints. Personally I don't see that it's worth it to spend more for a balcony since you're not in the room that much, but to each his own. :) The only room I'd splurge for is a cove balcony on the Dream or Vista class ships. Eileenfa1 Posted July 11, 2016 #23 Share Posted July 11, 2016 I'm gonna be the be the one that says yes it's a deal breaker for me. The higher the better and balcony only. On vista I'm on 12 deck balcony and on breeze , 11 deck balcony. It's lido or higher.[emoji5]
rockdoctor Posted July 11, 2016 #24 Share Posted July 11, 2016 I didn't read where you are going. This is important since cabins on higher decks are more expensive but lower deck cabins midship experience less ship motion. If you are going to Alaska from Seattle or to the Caribbean in hurricane season, I'd stay low.
Sabalon Posted July 11, 2016 #25 Share Posted July 11, 2016 We were on main on Glory, in the front. I liked it for two reasons * we went to lots of activities in the atrium, so it was a short walk down the hall and one flight of stairs to be where we wanted. * Platinum MDR was the aft of the ship on deck 3, so we walked all the way down the hallway and one flight of stairs and we were right there. Downside was Lido was a bit further, but other than waiting for an elevator it wasn't an inconvenience. Sea motion didn't bother me, felt just like Riviera. Being in the front of the ship mean we always knew when the anchor went down or the bow thrusters were on. Only way I think I'd want to be higher up is if I had a balcony.
