Alaskanwannabe Posted July 12, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 12, 2016 I have a question about Princess cruises. I am new here and this will be my first cruise. I have always wanted to go to Alaska and thinking about a Princess land and cruise at the end of August to Alaska. But I hate to do it if there are few other single travelers on board. I wanted to get feedback from others on this site that uses Princess. Thank you so much.
cruzsnooze Posted July 12, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 12, 2016 There is no way to know who will book your tour, singles, couples, family. In the many cruise tours I've taken it doesn't matter if you're solo, you become part of the group. This is not a worry for a solo cruiser. Alaskanwannabe Posted July 12, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted July 12, 2016 Thank you cruzsnooze I appreciate it. Was going to take my girlfriend but she cannot make it. I am looking at the 13 day sea and land cruise.
hpeabody Posted July 12, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 12, 2016 I cruise as a solo on Princess usually a couple times a year. I have not regretted it, ever. BTW, Alaska is wonderful and the land and cruise is the best way to do it IMHO. Just be careful and understand your train. Get a land tour that includes the Princess domed glass car and make sure you are in that car ahead of leaving for your trip. I never thought to check on it and my 9 hour train trip was hell in a packed old AK RR dining car. For the cruise I highly recommend one that offers Glacier Bay. Alaskanwannabe Posted July 12, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted July 12, 2016 Thank you hpeabody. Yes, I am considering the one that is cruise and land. With a stop on the cruise portion in Glacier National Park. Thank you as well for the info on the Domed glass car. I saw a video of that once on you tube and it looked spectacular. Thinking about this one: http://www.princess.com/find/cruiseDetails.do?voyageCode=2728&tourCode=T7AKA6

I think this one may use a coach and not the train, unless I missed something. But even a coach would be better than what I did.
Alaskanwannabe Posted July 12, 2016 Author #7 Share Posted July 12, 2016 Yes, i am sorry you had to deal with that. Especially Alaska where it is all about scenery.
Nhsaltshaker Posted July 12, 2016 #8 Share Posted July 12, 2016 (edited) I've done more than 10 cruises solo, two with a land tour. You'd be surprised (or maybe not) of all the people that 'feel bad for you'...really???... and adopt you as one of their own, buy you drinks, etc. I made great friends on my land tours, including my last Alaska tour. It was a Princess Connoisseur tour. What makes it more awesome, you usually have an extra seat next to you on buses and trains because it's hard to sell a solo fare. Trust me, you'll have a great time! Edited July 12, 2016 by Nhsaltshaker

moki'smommy Posted July 12, 2016 #10 Share Posted July 12, 2016 I've cruised several times as a solo. Seriously, the only down side is that essentially it costs you double fare.
Rare Coral Posted July 12, 2016 #11 Share Posted July 12, 2016 I've cruised several times as a solo. Seriously' date=' the only down side is that essentially it costs you double fare.[/quote'] I have cruised to Alaska solo also. What I like about cruising solo is that I don't have to compromise with anyone. I can do exactly what I wan to do. I am one that is fine with cruising solo. I don't find it necessary to attend solo meetings or meet people. I am ok watching the scenery outside by myself or reading a book on deck. This doesn't phase me - others it does. For these individuals there are plenty of ways to meet up with people.
Alaskanwannabe Posted July 12, 2016 Author #12 Share Posted July 12, 2016 Thank you so much for the responses. I always thought if I were to ever do a cruise solo it would be to Alaska. The idea of just watching scenery from a balcony or reading a book and taking it all in sounds great to me. Of course the only downside is the double rate. I am one that is fine with cruising solo. moki'smommy Posted July 13, 2016 #15 Share Posted July 13, 2016 Exactly as above--if you are comfortable being alone (as I am), cruising alone is not a big deal. In many ways it is preferable to having someone along as I can do exactly what I want. No, I don't do the singles activities. And I'm not looking for the Love Boat. I can enjoy my time by myself. RockAHula Baby Posted July 16, 2016 #16 Share Posted July 16, 2016 I have a question about Princess cruises. I did a 13 night cruise tour last year in September on my own. I was supposed to go with someone who wound up not being able to go. It was a great vacation. I was apprehensive about being alone, even though I love to read and in general enjoy alone time; but it seemed like it might be uncomfortable being by myself on a trip that is usually filled with couples. It was not an issue. I met people on the train that I spent time with at the lodges. Often we would be on the same excursions on the land tour. I had plenty of invites for meals on the land tour with the people I had met. I also joined the roll call for the cruise and met people at the onboard meet & greet the first day. I always had someone to eat dinner with on the cruise and some of the roll call people were on same tours I was on. There were couples and singles in the roll call. I did have an empty seat next to me often during the land tour, which wasn't bad at all (on the motor coaches from one lodge to next, on train, on excursions, etc) Gave me room to spread out and also, some of the people I met would ask if they could put some of their extra gear on the seat, so it was helpful to them. It was nice doing what I wanted on my own schedule. The only down side was in Anchorage. I went to Anchorage 2 days before cruise tour began and had booked a couple of tours that I really was excited about (bear viewing and jet ski) It was early Sept and we were the only ones that had booked the excursions. When I notified them that there would just be one person, both of them cancelled, they would not do the tour with just one person. It was disappointing but they had to give me my money back at least since it was their decision to cancel. I think you will have a great time; don't worry about being on your own! denatravels Posted July 17, 2016 #17 Share Posted July 17, 2016 I just came off the coral this morning-- solo northbound-- doing glacier bay and college fjord. Spectacular! And I didn't mind going solo-- so much to see. Met folks on excursions, at the let it ride table in the casino (where I won $600-- yeah!!), princess pop choir, shared dinner tables (I did anytime-- you don't want to miss port time or scenic cruising). I also was fine hanging out alone on the balcony! Sent from my iPhone using Forums
