Computer Nerd Posted August 13, 2016 #227 Share Posted August 13, 2016 (edited) There are a lot of things a lot of CEO's say that could be said differently, but in reality what he said is no different than a CEO saying he is going to increase profits by X, he just said it in a different way. true. the way he said it in obnoxious but it's turning out to be very accurate with the customers and customer service becoming the losers. I have friends (they cruise on Celebrity) that would never set foot on an NCL ship because of how they perceive it and they say they would never set foot on a ship that has cartoons painted on their hulls. Of course, I disagree with them, but no matter how much positive things I tell them, it is a no go for them. BTW, they wouldn't set foot on a Carnival ship either. i have no problem with people who are set in their ways or unadventurous as long as they don't try claim that xyz cruise lines is crappy when they have never set foot on a ship of that line. sfaaa Posted August 13, 2016 #231 Share Posted August 13, 2016 that may be true, but how happy with the north american ncl cheerleaders be when the only ship they have to sail on is the sun because ever other ncl ship is sailing out of bejing. ;) Hey don't knock The Sun. I'd been on it and it's a great ship. Even the rumored 'sewage smell' and odd flying soot won't bother me if the price is right.

SeaShark Posted August 14, 2016 #234 Share Posted August 14, 2016 There are a whole lot of things he could have said differently or not said at all, but he's used to the clientele on Oceania and Regent and let's face it, the way people that have lots of money look at things is vastly different than the way people without lots of money look at things. Del Rio has a long way to go to turn NCL into the premium line he envisions and from what I've seen it's going to be a long uphill battle and he might not make it. I don't know the origin of this idea, but I do keep seeing it repeated. While I'm certainly no Del Rio fan, I can't understand why he gets the credit for the idea of moving NCL from mainstream to premium. The idea of making NCL a premium line was Kevin Sheehan's...not FDR's.

The idea of making NCL a premium line was Kevin Sheehan's...not FDR's. I read it in the earlier threads shortly after Del Rio took the helm. If Sheehan was the originator then I think Sheehan was moving in the right direction, not sure that Del Rio is. Only time is going to tell. No...Kevin Sheehan plainly stated that he wanted NCL to LEAD the premium category...the HAL's and Celebrity's...and not to compete with Carnival and RCCL. It was a lot more than just saying that one ship was premium. Del Rio isn't onboard to carry on for Kevin Sheehan. He has done nothing but turn completely off the path that Kevin envisioned. I'm guessing Mr. Sheehan had only cruised on NCL and never set foot on a premium line or else he would have never made that comment. riclop Posted August 14, 2016 #241 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Even threads asking for positives with cruising with NCL have descended into negativity. It truly is depressing. I know, from reading this board for some time, that there have been a lot of changes to the NCL product which have been met with dismay, eg the water policy/replacing free eateries with paying ones, etc etc. but I'm afraid that's life. NCL is a business and as such is run with the intention of making money. How they then chose how to use the profits is up to the men back at Headquarters. They can either 'give back to the paying public or get greedy and increase prices more in order to make even more money' If it was a shop putting up prices and removing favourite items you would vote with your feet and never shop there again so maybe, just maybe the answer is to stop cruising with NCL. So many of you are complaining bitterly but still booking trips - why? If you feel that angry at the changes then choose another cruiseline; there are plenty out there. We will be on the Breakaway later this year and despite any misgivings that I have, we will have a great time. Maybe because it will be our first time on an NCL ship this big (we've done the Spirit) we won't notice what some people perceive as shortcomings. Hell, I'm on holiday; someone else is cooking my meals (free ones of course :D), washing up, making my bed, I have the UBP, and because I'm from the UK I don't pay the extra gratuities, so I will be more than happy. Just have to hope for good weather and smooth sailing. What more can a girl want?!!!! NCL is the worst of all the cruise lines.

Oddly some of the most expensive cruises I have been on had the least evening entertainment so a question I would have for you since I've never sailed on Celebrity or Crystal Cruises is what entertainment options are available on board these Cruise Line ships after 10 p.m.. Some ships practically roll up the carpet at 10 p.m. and the only thing you can find open is the Disco. Since I have Mobility impairments the Disco is not a good option. Personally, Sheehan didn't do a very good job with the Breakaway design. Rather than have the entire ship be premium, it's half-and-half. It's reminiscent of the Titanic movie. You have your cut rate passengers (the hoi polloi) in their tiny rooms stuck with their tiny common area, while the upper class in the Haven gets the first class treatment with private pools, dining, etc. If he was trying to sell the Breakaway class ships as clear step up in overall experience, he was lying. What Del Rio made worse is that the Breakaway class ships got all the downgrades the rest of the line has gotten over time, and more.

I agree, Mr. Sheehan did a poor job with the Breakaway, especially since he said it was a leader in the premium category, which is laughable. What is more ludicrous is that he though all of his other ships and the freestyle concept were reasons that NCL always had the opportunity to be at the top of the premium category. Come on, did he ever cruise on a premium line to see the difference between his ships and theirs. Why is it that no one called out Mr. Sheehan on this idiotic statements. Rare sparks1093 Posted August 14, 2016 #246 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Food is better, not only taste but offerings in the MDR (I don't eat in NCL's MDR after a couple of tries). I use to think NCL's buffet was better, but on my last Celebrity cruise, theirs was hands down better, especially the pasta bar. The cabins are larger; my first cruise on NCL was in a balcony cabin and I was shocked how much smaller it was versus a Celebrity balcony cabin. The linens are better. The toiletries in the cabin are better (not the thing on the wall with only bath soap and shampoo). Less smoking on Celebrity (casino). Canyon Ranch Spa is a plus to me. Some of the bars are more interesting to me. There is a dress code (I was a little shocked on my first NCL cruise to see grown men with baseball caps on in the MDR and specialty restaurants while having dinner). There are less children. I cruise with a luxury line (Crystal), a premium line (Celebrity) and a mass-market line (NCL) and I enjoy each one for what the experience is on that cruise line's ships. When I'm on a cruise, I don't say "oh, X does this better" or "this is different than from what X does", I just embrace the differences and it makes for a lovely cruise no matter what cruise line I'm on. NCL offers a great value for my cruising dollars, especially with their CAS (Celebrity's Blue Chip Club sucks, IMO) offerings (I still pay more than what many pay for their cruise on NCL, but I get a nice upgrade to an aft penthouse) and that is why I added NCL to my mix, so that I could go on more cruises. Many of my friends don't understand why I also cruise on NCL, but until they are not of value to me or their service declines to a point where I'm disappointed, I'll stick with them in my mix of lines. I'm not a big entertainment person, was in the music industry and saw so many of the greats, I'm jaded, but the entertainment is not great on either Celebrity or Crystal from what I've heard. It is not only entertainment that makes a premium cruise line, it is everything combined from the look and feel of the ship to the services to the amenities, etc. Did you mean to say "from what I've experienced" instead of "what I've heard"? From what I've heard seems to imply that you haven't sailed with either line.
swedish weave Posted August 14, 2016 #247 Share Posted August 14, 2016 (edited) Can anyone describe what makes a "premium cruise line" as opposed to the mainstream lines ?? It reminds me of a comment one of our executives made at a meeting. He said " you don't have to sell quality products and service. You have to sell the perception of quality and service." If a cruise line can convince enough people they are above their competition in quality and service, they can charge more. I believe Del Rio and company are failing in selling that perception. I also don't understand the disparaging remarks about Sheehan. He took over a company that Veitch was mismanaging to nearly the point of bankruptcy and turned it around into a profitable operation. He also convinced many people he was running a quality business and was successful in selling that idea.
