KCcruzor Posted August 6, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 6, 2016 My wife is concerned about our personal safety should we hail a cab in Cozumel (or anywhere in another country). Should we be concerned? Is crime very prevalent there? Might a public bus (if they exist) be a better option? Thanks in advance! KCcruzor
JohninDC Posted August 6, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 6, 2016 Cabs are safe and well regulated in Cozumel (something I cannot say about Philadelphia!). There will be a board near the cab line for your pier (3 cruise ship piers on Coz - be sure you go back to the correct pier ;)) with the fares posted to most of the common tourist destinations. Initial fare covers up to 4 passengers in the cab going to the same destination - so pair up with others on your roll call and save $$ for more margaritas. It never hurts to verify the fare BEFORE you get into the cab, but I've never had a problem during multiple visits to Coz. Have a great cruise! :)
OCruisers Posted August 6, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 6, 2016 (edited) Except that they drive like "bats out of hell" they are safe. :D Edited August 6, 2016 by OCruisers
Purvis1231 Posted August 6, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 6, 2016 Cozumel is the safest place in Mexico. The cabs are better than most places in Mexico but keep in mind they get paid a commission by many bars, resorts, etc. So they may try to direct you to one of their preferred vendors. maldenmusic Posted August 6, 2016 #5 Share Posted August 6, 2016 They dive pretty fast but we have never felt unsafe. It is usually just my daughter and I in Coz and the drivers have always been very courteous.
trystran72 Posted August 13, 2016 #6 Share Posted August 13, 2016 Never had a problem in Cozumel, or anywhere in Mexico actually. There's a great taxi area there in port that will verify prices for you and arrange the ride.
Teachmath1 Posted August 13, 2016 #7 Share Posted August 13, 2016 Safe from crime, yes. Safe from driving, not so sure. The cab driver we had last time drove crazy, but it looked like most did.
PatyCake Posted August 14, 2016 #8 Share Posted August 14, 2016 LOL, yes our cabs are safe and most drivers are very honest. Make sure that you check the seat and floor when getting out to confirm you have all your belongings. If a driver finds something the chances are good he will turn it in. The problem is when another passenger gets in after you. Also beware of the occasional purse snatching which happens to us locals as well as tourists. Women need to always use an across the chest purse. If you are going to the beach take only the cash and cards that you need in a waterproof container. Do not leave expensive things or purses in plain sight without someone there. Basically use common sense.
