Zika in Bahamas

Hi Everyone,

My family and I are taking a cruise to the Bahamas next month. Until recently there was no Zika there. Am I crazy to be worried. I am not pregnant and will not become pregnant. I have 3 kids aged 10 and over coming with me. Just do not want to put them in any danger even though the risks are probably low. Anyone have any thoughts? Calm me down please!

Thank you

You don't mention where you are sailing from. If you are sailing out of Miami, be aware that most of Miami Beach is an area in which non-travel-related zika cases have developed. The Port of Miami is not so far from there, so be careful.

On the other hand, if you are leaving from Port Canaveral, for example, I don't know of any non-travel related zika cases there.

There is a lot of travel-related zika in Florida, so caution is warranted. Use bug repellant with Deet. If you can stand the heat, wear long sleeves and long pants. I've tried to do that all summer, but it is really, really hot here in Florida. It is said that mosquitoes that carry zika are day biters.
