4spring Posted September 30, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 30, 2016 what happens? Will I get my money back for the cruise at least? Or am I completely out of luck. I booked the cruise last minute (less than two weeks ago). I wanted to shop around for ins because I didn't feel like the cruise ship ins offered enough in terms of medical. I found some through CSA that sounds good & reasonable but now I'm afraid because of the hurricane, its too late to purchase. we leave on Monday (hopefully). Thoughts? Viv0828 Posted October 1, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 1, 2016 (edited) If your cruise is cancelled, you will probably get a refund. If not, you can dispute the charge on your credit card statement. Edited October 1, 2016 by Viv0828
sirwired Posted October 1, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 1, 2016 You would receive a refund for the cruise from the cruise line. You'd be on your own for other expenses (airfare, pre-cruise hotel, etc.) Insurance is still a good idea. You can't receive coverage for an existing storm, but there are other valuable parts of trip insurance, and they would be unaffected. You may want to consider a medical/medevac-only policy if the remainder of the policy has no value to you.
luv2trvlnow Posted October 1, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 1, 2016 If your cruise is cancelled you would get a refund. But they hardly ever cancel a cruise because of a hurricane. They just change the itinerary to avoid the storm One of Carnival's cruises has changed from Half Moon Cay and Grand Turk to Cozumel and Costa Maya. Babr Posted October 1, 2016 #5 Share Posted October 1, 2016 As long as the port of embarkation is not affected, you should be OK. You'll still go on a cruise - just maybe not the one you planned for. Ships change the itinerary as necessary to stay out of harm's way. As others have pointed out, there are still good reasons to have insurance such as medical and evacuation coverage. Check your credit card for cancellation coverage. It might not exclude the possiblity of a hurricane since it appears you paid for the cruise before the storm formed. 4spring Posted October 2, 2016 Author #6 Share Posted October 2, 2016 Thanks for everyone's feedback. I was able to get cruise insurance through CSA (maybe because I had booked cruise less than 2 weeks ago). I feel much better now as I was most concerned about getting the medical coverage "just in case". I agree, I think the ship will sail regardless. Leaving out tomorrow to who knows where! :)
