I'm impressed! 4000 books! Hope you didn't lose them when the Sony went kaput. That you were able to transfer all of them to your iPad. I too was an early adopter of ebooks using the MobipocketReader app installed on my PalmPro handheld (later IIIxe, m505, m515, and T5). I had a few hundred ebooks. When I got an iPodTouch4, I was able to transfer most of them over, but not all. Most I just re-downloaded from Baen in epub format. I forget what I had to do to convert the rest from mobi to epub format, the ones that weren't protected. FYI - Amazon bought the French company behind the MobipocketReader, which is why Kindle reads Mobi format.

I have my Sonys as well. There is one feature that they handle perfectly, unlike a Kindle or tablet: dictionaries whole readibg foreign language books!
