kbset Posted October 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 9, 2016 Hi Everyone! Our daughter, Elizabeth, who will be 2 1/2 at the time of the cruise has a disability and my husband and I were wondering what kind/type of travel insurance would be best to get for her. Thank you :)
LokiPoki Posted October 9, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 9, 2016 Depending on her disability & any accompanying health issues, or potential ones (as I notice you've got an osteogenesis imperfecta awareness tag in your sig...I'm not sure if that's for your daughter?) I'd be going for something pretty comprehensive and that you can be sure will cover stuff like medevac if need be. We've always gone with Chubb corporate for us - I have trouble getting cover with most companies as I've got (amongst other things) severe dystonia kept in check by an implanted spinal pump - I function well while it's working, but if something goes bang it becomes a potential medical emergency that even many mainland hospitals aren't equipped (or rather, don't have the expertise) to handle. Have no experience with them, but someone on a recent topic here mentioned Insure & Go as being willing to cover a lot of pre-existing. Haven't spoken to anyone there, but I did check them out online to see if they'd cover my multiple stuff - on the face of it they do - so maybe is worth giving them a call if nobody else comes back with suggestions. raindropsalways Posted October 10, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 10, 2016 (edited) I just get the basic CSA Travel Insurance and purchase it before final payment is made, thus existing conditions are covered. Since your daughter is a minor child, I would verify that the emergency transportation covers a parent. The air evac was a big bill. Also, double check on the existing conditions for your own comfort. I was involved in an accident in Grenada this past January. The ship sent me to the local hospital and the local hospital told the insurance that none of the hospitals there had the facilities to take care of me. I was air evac to Fort Lauderdale where I had surgery spent a few days their and then commercial air to Minneapolis where I spend three weeks in a Nursing home going through rehab. My travel insurance covered everything that Medicare and my Medicare supplemental insurance did not cover, which included all air, my escort from Fort Lauderdale, her hotel and return flight, my deductible and the cash transportation cost getting from the accident to the ship. Have a wonderful cruise, Betty Edited October 10, 2016 by raindropsalways
xxoocruiser Posted October 10, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 10, 2016 (edited) To have pre-existing medical conditions, most insurance companies require the policy it has to be purchased with 10-14 days of the initial booking date. Also note it states in the pre-existing waiver the individual must be fit to travel when the policy was covered meaning have you cleared any travel with your duaghter's doctors. Any travel insurance you consider should include medical coverage , evacuation , covers the expense of a parent staing with her and cost of repatriation (flight back home for both of you). Though others on this forum have posted specific companies you need to do your own comparison of policies to determine what best suits the needs of your daughter. The following are trusted sites that allow you to compare multiple polcies. Though you can purchase policies through these third party sites, I recommond that once you have decided on a policy you actuallky call that insurance company directly to ask any questions you may have as well as to purchase a policy. http://www.insuremytrip.com http://www.squaremouth.com http://www.quotewright.com Note i"Insure & Go" was recommended back in Post #2 of this thread. Insure & Go is a comparison site similar to the ones I've list above but is primarly for policies for individuals residing outsite the USA. Being that your profile states Michigan it's probably not the best website to use. Edited October 10, 2016 by xxoocruiser

Wonder what quality of clinical experience the students get... EM (retired nurse).
GoneJohnson Posted October 10, 2016 #6 Share Posted October 10, 2016 I am 57 yrs old and was disabled at age 15 a quadriplegic of 42 years. I use an electric wheelchair 24/7. I'm not sure of your medical needs but suggest getting a policy that waives the pre existing condition. Most do this automatically if purchased within 7 days of booking a cruise. They vary. As mentioned above if you'd need/want medijet services or just a good solid medical policy. The tripinsurancestore and others also have policies that you can purchase policies that waive the pre existing condition up until final payment date. Wonder what quality of clinical experience the students get... EM (retired nurse). It was the broken hip. They preformed surgery at Broward Hospital and I now have three pins. The broken collar bone was just a nuisance, the bump on my head and abrasions were nothing to worry about. Foot did some massive swelling, but nothing was wrong. In all honesty, I would have rather finished the cruise. I was in Grenada General Hospital. There was another accident involving ship's tour and those patients were sent to the private hospital. I heard my doctor tell the insurance representative that none of the hospitals there had facilities that could accommodate me. I do recall that their x-ray equipment was rather obsolete.
