San Francisco: New, Best, Different?!!?

Recommended Posts

Terry, since we know you are a terrific photographer you might want to make the Homeless People of San Francisco a target of you your camera lens. In SF they are every where and quite photogenic :).

Appreciate Hank's excellent sense of humor!! Plus the other good follow-ups. Keep it coming!! Getting within two and a half months of our departure date for our "adventure" from Ft. Lauderdale to San Francisco via the Panama Canal. It is getting very cold in the Midwest now and we need to be looking forward to some warmer weather, nice beaches, etc. Plus, great food in San Francisco!!

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

The places to go for Italian in San Francisco are Sotto Mare, Venticello, Trattoria Contadina, E' Tutto Qua, Franchino, Firenze by Night, Ristorante Ideale and Sodini's Green Valley.

My single favorite restaurant in SF.... well above any of the Michelin starred places, is Tadich Grill followed by Sam's Grill and Swan Oyster Depot. All three are well over 100 years old and Tadich is the oldest restaurant in CA, dating to the Gold Rush era.

No trip to San Francisco is complete without the chocolate raisin sourdough bread from Boudin's.

Great to get these added thoughts, ideas and suggestions. In central Ohio, we got about 3 inches of snow this week that made things look very pretty in our ravine area as the trees were covered in a magical way. It was single digit lows (F) here overnight. Cold, cold!! Looking forward to escaping the cold in late February to depart Ft. Lauderdale to do our cruise through the Panama Canal with our first visits to Colombia, Central America and Mexico, then finishing in San Francisco.

On Monday, I was able to log on and get tickets for Hamilton, the super hot, hot musical ticket. It opens March 10 for a 22-week run in San Francisco. In late February, we will see this Hamilton production on Thursday, March 16 in SF after our cruise arrives there on March 15. Tickets sold out in just one day for this entire, long run. Our tickets are seventh row of the loge/balcony, center. Lucky!! This is a high-demand ticket where the re-sellers now are wanting to get four or five times the face value. Anyone else going to see Hamilton in the near future or having other interesting, new things to suggest in the scenic Bay City? Have been to San Francisco about six or seven times and always enjoy its unique sights and style.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Ghirardelli Square has changed drastically. Ice cream is still very good. There are now two Ghirardelli shops here. The upper one is has seating and a huge line. The lower one, at street level facing the bay, has a few tables but is quicker.

Great to have this additional information. Keep these helpful and interesting items coming and flowing. Wonderful sharing. Don't be shy. Below is a visual for a couple books that I got recently from our local library and have been checking. Lots of nice pictures, details, options, etc. Much research to do for these three days in San Francisco. Personally, it's nice to have today's books with more and better charts, graphics, visuals images, maps, building cut-aways, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

I second the recommendations to visit the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It is closed on Wednesdays, so don't plan a trip then. Also the Matisse/Diebenkorn exhibit opens on March 10th. If you want to make sure you see it you might want to visit the museum's website and get tickets for it. They have timed entry for special exhibits that sometimes sell out. Their website is:

https://www.sfmoma.org/

Even if you don't visit the museum if you find yourself in the area when it's open there's an amazing huge (you walk through it) metal sculpture that's free to the public that you can get to from Howard Street just NE of 3rd.

If you're into wine you can take BART to Oakland and check out the Oakland Urban Wine Trail

https://www.visitoakland.com/things-to-do/oakland-urban-wine-trail/

There are so many things to do in San Francisco I'm sure you'll find something you enjoy. If you have any specific areas of interest you'd like to explore please let us know. I live in San Jose and work in San Francisco and have lived in the area for decades.

Hello, looking to join in this conversation. DH and I have just booked Southampton to San Francisco on the Queen Elizabeth for next year (don't want to wish my life away, but hurry up :D). Really excited about transiting the Panama Canal which will be a tick off our bucket list.

We have an added three nights in SF after we disembark so what would you say are the Must Sees? Alcatraz, of course but what else. I've scrolled through previous posts but they seem to be heavily into food (not complaining!) but it would be helpful if suggestions of places to visit were posted.

Re restaurants: Are there any kosher ones in the area? We are staying near Fisherman's Wharf.

Thanks in advance.

Look at Trip Advisor, Frommer's etc for what to see and do in San Francisco. West Coast Departure board has lots of info.

Google 'Kosher Restaurants San Francisco'. Lots of lists pop up. Sorry cannot help with location. Depending on your level of Kashrut, there are many vegetarian and vegan restaurants in San Francisco.

Hag Purim!

ETA- there are two kosher wineries Hagafen in Napa and Covenant in Berkeley. Berkeley is much closer than Napa.

Off the top of my head:

-Legion of Honor

-SF MOMA

-Academy of Sciences (if you have kids with you)

-Exploratorium (if you have kids with you)

-De Young Museum

-Japanese Tea Garden

-If you want to try the Ghiradelli Square ice cream or chocolate without waiting in line, there's also a store in the Palace Hotel (at New Montgomery and Market) which usually isn't that busy.

-Golden Gate Park

-If you like baseball, AT&T Park. They do tours. If going to a game, get Club Level tickets; they have some really nice memorabilia to check out at the Club Level.

-Wine Country: Sonoma, Napa, or Santa Cruz Mountains (requires a car or a tour)

-Muir Woods

-Golden Gate Park

-Golden Gate Bridge

-Sausalito

-Ferry Building

-Coit Tower

-Palace of Fine Arts

-Fisherman's Wharf

Kosher wine has improved dramatically over the last few years. How would we get to the two wineries you mention. Might be different to doing Napa.

Thanks for this. Will do some Googling and start making some sort of itinerary. Hate waking up having nothing planned. And yes I know I've lots of time. Part of the fun of the holiday is the preparation.

A question. Is a Citypass worth getting?

Drive or take a private tour. Couldn't find any kosher restaurants, just a caterer in the Napa area. That's almost a full day. Berkeley is across simply across the bay.

Pick a few and let us know. We'll tell you our (un)biased opinions ;);p

Tempted to say all of them! I'm going to be cheeky here (or just plain lazy) and ask if anyone can suggest how to spend the 3 days. Napa Valley is one day? That leaves the two days and the most obvious itinerary is one that doesn't have us going back and forth. Perhaps I should add that we are Senior Citizens in reasonable health but don't want to end each day too knackered :D Will need some stamina for the next day.

Which is the best area for shopping?

Good news? San Francisco has not just been great!! It's been super spectacular!! Wonderful weather, architecture, history and sights. BUT, the bad news is not having that much spare time to update and post pictures. Have had a busy and wonderful time doing Alcatraz, riding the Cable Car from Fisherman's Wharf to Market Street, doing an all-around town tour including across the super windy Golden Gate Bridge, enjoying very good food, etc.

The best great was last night with HAMILTON, the top, Tony-Award-winning musical that just opened its 22-week, sold-out-in-a-day series of performances here in the Bay City. WOW!! It lives up to and goes beyond all of the hype and praise. Really well done with great staging, lighting, singing, orchestra, costumes, etc. Very impressive to see such history coming alive and being enjoyed by such a younger and very diverse audience. The worries on it being done in "rap" was not an issue or problem. Thomas Jefferson, as the original book did, is painted rather differently than some might expect.

Below are three quick photo examples/samples from last night's Hamilton performance in San Francisco.

For our Southwest Air flight tomorrow, it is a non-stop from Oakland to Columbus that departs at 10:55 am. Nice not to have any needs to plane changes in the big airports at Chicago or Dallas/Ft. Worth. It is snowing in Columbus today. Very good to be enjoying the sunshine in the upper 60's weather in San Francisco for today.

Will have lots more, including many visuals, to share in the next week or so.

THANKS for all of the great sharing, tips and suggestions. ! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

From last night's Hamilton musical, here are three quick photo samples. Nice sign on their older, historic theatre where this hyper-popular show is being performed in San Francisco. Not allowed to take pictures during the program, but below are two visuals as the show is being finished and the cast gets loud applause. Notice the interesting set/staging, including two large revolving circular parts of the stage floor? We were very fortunate to not only have obtained tickets, but to be in the seventh row center of the Loge. Perfect for how this musical has been staged in such a wide-open, two-level manner.:

Thought I would post here a number of the many fun visuals that I captured during our wonderful March 2017 visit to San Francisco. As we were headed home to Columbus and Ohio, we had Wi-Fi on our Southwest Air flight. That helped me track the scores for NCAA March Madness basketball action, read news stories, etc.

We had a wonderful three days and evenings in San Francisco!! Many more pictures on the full live/blog for this Fort Lauderdale to SF adventure.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Panama Canal? Just completed Feb. 28-Mar. 15, 2017, Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco adventure through the Panama Canal with our first stops in Colombia, Central America and Mexico, plus added time in the great Golden Gate City. Lots of fun pictures!! Those pictures start on the second page, post #26. See more at:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2465580

Here is the view as our plane was taking off from Oakland for the rising and changing skyline of San Francisco, plus part of the Bay Bridge on the right side. Plus, you can also see the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz in the middle of the Bay, etc. Second shows graphics on our place for our flight progress. Nice to have a non-stop flight from the west coast to Columbus. Not needing to change planes is great!!:

Our Southwest Air flight arrived ahead of schedule, baggage all there, friends picked us up, etc. Good news!

Below are just three pictures showing our Island Princess ship docked in the San Francisco harbor, at dock 27. Going out to Alcatraz and coming back, I had a chance to get several visuals showing "our" ship and some of the SF skyline.

How does the Island Princess look? Here are three of my visuals of this ship at Pier 27 in San Francisco. Classy setting and nice looking ship! Notice in the first picture, the sea gull flying at the top with the soon to be tallest SF building being constructed in the immediate background. The second picture shows part of the Bay Bridge in the background. Smart that the Island Princess was "backed" into this docking place, making its 4 pm departure easier.:
