Felicia,

How you doin' with Picasa?

Jerry

Jerry:

I may call you, but maybe you can finish helping me on here first. Surely I'm not the only person who can't get this, so you may be helping others as well.

Ok, I have the email set up and I have selected the ones I want (and I have captions.) Now how in the heck do I set up a slideshow? I sent myself 3 pix as a test and you have to click on them individually, which I don't want to do.

That's all that's left. So close!!!

Felicia,

I think you're doing fine.

Slideshow does not work with photos emailed.

Slide show will work with images you upload to a web album ... and with photos distributed to friends via a CD (or DVD).

This is because the Picasa program is what starts and controls the slideshow feature.

That feature is automatically distributed (free) when you make a CD, (by default) ...

With web invitation, a version of the feature runs remotely when someone is looking at your images via a web album.

Hope this helps you.

The only other way that the slideshow feature could work is if the person you're sending the photos to also uses Picasa. In that case, they can save the photos you emailed to a folder on their PC. Then, when they start Picasa, it will automatically load the images and allow them to use the slideshow feature.

Hope this is clear.

Jerry

D & D

I have yet to see a post about cruising India.

WIT

Thanks, Wit, but I was referring to the non-river Viking tours at VikingTours.com that are starting up in 2008. Just wondering if anyone had discovered message boards for the upcoming 2008 tours. (I really did go off-subject on this one. I just found the boards so invaluable.) I wonder if they need a beta tester?

Felicia--

There's a much easier way to do this . . . send your Picasa url to someone via e-mail. They can select an album (if you have more than one album, which is how I organized my photos) and then select slideshow.

I've been working on my photos all weekend. Do you still have the link I sent you last weekend via e-mail? Select the album you wish to look at and then select slideshow. This is how we've been sharing our photos with friends and relatives.

Assuming you uploaded to the Picasa web album . . . ? You just want to share your photos with other, yes? Or, am I not getting it? [i just heard you sighing . . . ]

Sorry, Felicia--

I just saw your e-mail and resent the url to you for the pictures. I think you lose a some of the quality on Picasa but people can zoom in using the magnifying glass when they are not in the slideshow. I didn't add up the number of photos I took . . . and I deleted quite a few before uploading.

Please share your url via e-mail when it goes up. I plan to e-mail those in our group as well. We shared e-mail addresses (like High School) when we had our group photo (I scanned and uploaded it to Picasa) at the Great Wall. I know I have pictures of others and am guessing they have a few of D and me.

I'll check the board (and e-mail) later tonight. . .

Picasa quality ..

Here are some things to consider.

1. The quality of the images you post to a Picasa web album is defined by the size you choose to upload. The size is set when you're about to send the images - you will be prompted to select a size immediately prior to the upload. The size quality and speeds are presented for your consideration.

With email, the quality you elect to send is controlled under options, email tab, the select the size there.

2. Changes you make to images in Picasa appear when you view them in Picasa only... until and unless you "save changes". Following that, the changes stay with the image when opened or copied to other programs.

FYI, the original (without changes) is always available in Picasa should you need it.

I do not understand the post by WIT where he posted the link: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/searc...archid=7455431

This is just a general search link which leads one to nowhere. Is there a specific forum or link site that would link one to a Viking River Cruise China forum?

jschutz - Sorry to misdirect you. The link was created by going to the River Cruises forum and searching for posts containing the word 'Viking'. Some of those posts are about Viking China cruises but Jerry is right, the most extensive forum on Viking China is right here.

You know me so well. <G>

I'm just out of it - too many interviews at work - getting my house painted has things in disarray, and plenty of other excuses for my idiocy.

I like how you set yours up in albums, then I could choose to do the slideshow of each one. That's what I'm aiming for. But I did have Picasa downloaded.

Now my SIL emailed me pictures the other day and I did not have to download the program to view her slideshow. Is there any way around this with Picasa?

Btw, did anyone see the Anthony Bourdain episode on Shanghai? I have recorded it for weekend viewing.

Also, for those of you interested, one of my $2 Rolex watches got trashed (the band kept coming loose) and the other one is still in great shape! :)

I searched Picasa this a.m. and couldn't find any "help" for sending a slideshow via e-mail. I wonder if that is a different program? We've just sent the url to people to check out the photos. It's quick and easy and they don't have to look at the photos if they don't want to. I would think a slideshow attachment would be a huge file to send via e-mail?

I did have some problems uploading because I wasn't patient enough. Was trying to upload too many files at a time and the computer ended up freezing up on me and recklessly cropping big sections off my photos during the upload. Fortunately, I could go back into Picasa2 and "undo" the damage. I may not have undone everything because I did do quite a bit editing and cropping, but I kept a back-up of the originals on DVD so I can always go back to that if I want to see what the original really looked like.

You need to find a coffee shop that has a bunch of computer savvy people hanging out in it and befriend a couple! :D

Minnesota Nice x II

Sending email photos with Picasa does just (and only) that.

To use the Picasa slideshow feature, two other methods will work.

1. Using Picasa, set up web albums, then upload your photos - then use the web album "invitation" to (invite others to see your albums and use slideshow)

or

2. Friends can save received Picasa emailed photos to their hard drive, then run the Picasa application locally, using the slideshow feature.

Also, to speed uploads, when preparing to send, choose a smaller size from the list - for most images, the recipient will see little difference, especially when viewing on-screen.

When creating a CD with photos Picassa at the end of the burn will ask if a copy of itself should be included, so the recipient can select the slideshow option. If you download Picassa you can include that downloaded file in your email so the folks at the other end can install Picassa & run the slideshow.

Felicia,

Simply save the pictures that your SIL sent to a folder on your hard drive.

Picasa should see them and allow you to browse or do a slideshow.

If Picasa does not automatically load them, open Picasa, look under "tools" then, under "folder manager", see which drives and folders are automatically scanned for new images. Be sure the ones you use are selected to do so.

We will be leaving soon for the Cultral Delights, Nov 2, 2007 tour.

I know we will have an escort with us beginning in Shanghai (maybe the escort from the Hong Kong add-on). Will we also have a local guide in Shanghai and Beijing? Will the local guide be a "Specialist" for the place we are visiting? Will we have more than 1 local guide during a day?

Thanks for all of the wonderful advice and information. I am trying to estimate money for tips.

We had a Viking "Escort" who was everywhere with us 24/7 for the entire trip. When touring, a local "expert" guide joined our group for the day. He or she knew the subject (location, site) well and in all but one case, spoke perfect English. In that situation, the "escort" helped to translate - and often knew the tour well enough to chime in when appropriate. In crowded venues, where practical, wireless earphone systems were deployed allowing each of us to separate from the group while still being able to hear the guide talk about the location we were touring.

Tips: Should a just pay in US $ or in local currency, especially for the drivers and local guides. Also do the Escorts have a preference on currency for tips?

Photos: We will be carrying extra memory cards for our cameras. Is there any place where we can have the memory cards downloaded to a CD?

We hope to carry enough memory cards and would use the CD Downloads as "back-up".

Thanks again for the great help.

Emily

PS I will report back especially on the weather. I know we will have much cooler weather traveling in Novemeber.

Is the trip and tour of the Ceramic History Museum an all day event?

One person suggested to skip the Museum unless you are really "into" ceramics.

If we skip the museum trip would we be able to walk around the area near the dock? and the just "rest"?

Also is the Mt Jiu Hua an all day excursion? Could we walk around the area near the dock some and use the rest of the day to rest?

After reading about the Snow Jade Cave, I think we will choose the city tour.

Thanks again,

Emily, we used US dollars for souvenirs, for hotel maid tips, water on the bus, for the bus drivers and local guides. They accepted these (as did all street vendors) quite eagerly.

Our "escort" when asked by one of the persons in our group, replied that he preferred gratuities be in Chinese Yuan.

About the Ceramic Museum, we found it interesting and yes it was a full day. All of the tours are nicely described in the brochures - suggest you review the materials - the description covers things like meals, length etc.

I do believe that you can arrange to download your memory cards while on-board the ship. Perhaps someone watching this post can help you with confirmation and costs.

WIT... do you know??

We are leaving Tuesday on the Imperial Jewels. We have a free day in Hong Kong and are considering the hydrocoil boat to Macau. Is this doable? Would it be time consuming considering the need to go through customs 4 times (out of Hong Kong, into Macau, out of Macau and into Hong Kong). Would our time be better spent elsewhere? Advice?

I need to know my expected arrival time of our flight from Guilian to Shanghai . Also about what time would I arrive at the hotel.

I am trying to arrange dinner with a Friend's Friend who now lives and works in Shanghai for a USA company.

Emily

PS I think I turned off my signature. It really took up a lot of space.
