luvbluseas Posted January 20, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2017 A number of years ago my DH and I sailed RCCL there were a number of mishaps and we had a terrible cruise. We said then that we would never said RCCL again. Well. . . . A group that we really wanted to be a part of, sailed on a 4 night cruise on IotSeas on 1/5-1/9. We decided that it had been a long time since we had had problems with RCCL and lots of people sail it and like it, so we would go with the group. Well, it was a big disappointment. This time there were NO service issues, which was the problem the last time, but I just don't get how so many of you love it so much....The food was terrible, Carnival's is actually better food, for less money! The ship's carpet, drapes, decoration's bedding, etc. were old and tired looking. The rest of the ship was well maintained, but we were not crazy about the lay-out. We always love going to the coffee-bar to relax , read the news, read a book, watch the sea, etc. But not on this ship, they have a live band playing and busting your ear-drums! The band was good, but to us should have been at the pool! Sorry, just NOTHING that we liked, unless we are desperate to be with "group" again, we go back to "never RCCL". I am sure that RCCL fans will not miss us and be glad for more room for them. They can have the folks that have no clue how to dress in public, they are all yours. I assume you are referring to Independence. If so, where is this coffee bar where you can watch the sea? Edited January 20, 2017 by clarea

I was onboard until I read this...(highlighted in red) Coming from Carnival, that's rich! Carnival is the cruise line that made me retire my tux. Had my tux on and here we are in the dining room with people wearing jeans, with their butt cracks hanging out. But it is what it is. I still cruise CCL, not a lot anymore but when I do I dress down for the dining room.:) Bill Edited January 20, 2017 by S.S.Oceanlover spelling

shippmates Posted January 20, 2017 #11 Share Posted January 20, 2017 Sorry you were disappointed in RCL. We have found on any cruise line the shorter cruises have different passengers than a longer cruise. Most of them are great some not so much. Hope you find a ship and cruise line you like. captaincupcake64 Posted January 20, 2017 #12 Share Posted January 20, 2017 Amen! To each their own, but I had a good LOL that Carnival > RCL. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk My DW and I have only been cruising for ten years. IMO the dress codes on all lines seem to be more relaxed in that short length of time. We do enjoy formal nights. I don't have a lot of opportunities to dress up and look forward to seeing my DW looking fabulous. It doesn't bother us in the least how other people choose to dress. It's there vacation too. captaincupcake64 / Bob
Suzieanna Posted January 20, 2017 #13 Share Posted January 20, 2017 horses for courses I suppose. I looked at Carnival but it looked a bit too stressful and "partyish" for my liking. Does a band play in the coffee bar on some Royal ships then? if that's true, I agree its a bit odd?

The only situation that comes to mind is the music in the centrum on Vision and Radiance class ships that may be heard in Cafe Latte-Tudes a couple of decks up. Clarea Posted January 20, 2017 #17 Share Posted January 20, 2017 I'm trying to picture where they would put a band in or near the Cafe Promenade. I just recalled that sometimes I've seen part of the orchestra doing a jazz set under the stairs that go up to the forward bridge over the Royal Promenade. However, no view of the sea in this situation.

You're correct, there is a small view of the water out those portholes between the lifeboats.
saharaga Posted January 20, 2017 #21 Share Posted January 20, 2017 I think you are correct. On Carnival, the coffee shops tend to be situated near an area called the "Boulevard". It's an area with windows and lounge type seating. The Café Promenade on the Indy does not have this setup. I think they are saying in general they like a coffee bar spot on a ship (any ship) where they can do those things, but on Indy it did not match their preferences. saharaga Posted January 20, 2017 #22 Share Posted January 20, 2017 No. There is typically a band in the casino or a nearby lounge on Carnival. You can hear them from the coffee bar. horses for courses I suppose. I looked at Carnival but it looked a bit too stressful and "partyish" for my liking. George C Posted January 20, 2017 #23 Share Posted January 20, 2017 I agree on the "no clue how to dress in public" for a small percentage of RCCL cruisers, I think it is even worse on cruises out of Texas, however to say Carnival dress any better is highly questionable

You guys seem like you're a good fit for a Viking River/Ocean Cruise... Quiet; very little entertainment; all the old folks are dressed in their Sunday best; food is probably better (10 different flavors of Ensure).
