Rare GeezerCouple Posted April 3, 2017 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2017 We'll be staying in Bergen for a few days before a cruise on Hurtigruten in March, 2018. Which area of town is the "best" for selecting a hotel, in terms of being near things of interest, and also in an interesting area of town? A special "view" of some sort is always nice. Next, which hotel? When traveling, we prefer a flavor of the local area, and we try to avoid when possible (not always possible) hotels that have too much a feel of a hotel in a USA chain. (Proximity to good coffee in the morning for DH is a factor, and it's okay if he needs to go "out".) Yes, we've looked through TripAdvisor, but it's difficult to know which to choose, and some personal recommendations (good or not) would be really helpful. All of the hotels here seem priced within our range, so that probably isn't a factor in this particular town. Thank you.
mhb1757 Posted April 3, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2017 There are several nice hotels in the Bryggen. Hotel Havnekontoret is good. It is in the old shipping headquarters and close to all of the sites. The rates there include breakfast, afternoon waffles and an evening buffet. There is the Grand Terminus which is right by the train station. A little farther from the Bryggen but still within easy walking distance (1/2 mile or less). It is also a grand old historic inn. Rates there (and pretty much every place in Norway) include breakfast. The Hansetke (not sure about the spelling) is in the Bryggen near the fish market. Never stayed there but friends loved it. It is a small locally owned inn. Of these the Grand Terminus is the farthest from the usual sites but all are in walking distance. Depending on your travel dates hotels in the Bryggen may require a 2 night minimum stay although that doesn't sound like it would be an issue. But the Grand Terminus does not seem to have stay minimums. But March isn't peak tourist season so you should have your pick of places!
Heartgrove Posted April 5, 2017 #3 Share Posted April 5, 2017 We will be staying at the Det Hanseatiske Hotel in Bryggen, Bergen this June before our cruise. We chose it for location and the interesting description. I will report back after our stay.
