Scooter Rental

I plan to rent a transportable scooter for the first time for my upcoming 8 day cruise on the Carnival Vista. I got a price of $175+ insurance ($90) and cancellation ($10) from Scootaround. A Carnival Representative suggested I look for a local company and rent through them. The rep also commented the insurance is not necessary.

Questions:

Has anyone used a local company for this type of rental at a lower price?

Has anyone needed to use their purchased insurance for damage or loss to their scooter while on the cruise?

Thanks for any insights.

Lyn

We used Special Needs At Sea when we cruised out of Miami in January. We paid $208 total. This was for a 10 night back to back on Disney and they put the ECV in your assigned cabin for you, and you leave it there when you are done.

Suggest you check Yelp for reviews of Scootaround.

Reviews not very good for sure! I wasn't impressed with customer service on phone either.

Walgrens Pharmacies sell small scooters for $500. I may have to go that route. Although, I don't know how good they are either.

Again, thanks for the heads up!

Update: As I continue to research, I have decided I do not want to purchase a scooter. I could not find any "local" rental companies in Miami. And, both Scootaround and Special Needs at Sea have both good and bad reviews- but I will take my chances and rent from one of them.

This is my current concern - Both companies offer the Pride Go Go Sport. Special Needs etc is $208 including insurance and Scootaround is $275 including insurance. I'm a believer in 'you get what you pay for'. Is there any reason there is a $67 difference?

Thanks

You are talking about a motorize wheel chair like a Rascal, right? You're not talking about a scooter as in mini-motorcycle?

I was asking about a mobility scooter. I actually reposted on the traveling with disabilities board. I think that board would be more appropriate.

I use Special Needs at Sea for my husband's wheelchair rental. We cruise almost every two months. They are good and depending which cruise line, they sometimes have rentals right at the curb.

Scootaround was wonderful for my very last minute rental in Jan. I did not get the insurance and wish I did when elevator doors closed on my scooter and beat it up a bit. My cabin person said not to worry about it. Nothing was ever said to me. I had get taken off in a wheelchair, so my scooter was left in the area they told me to go to.

I did turn in the receipt to my insurance, United Health expecting nothing, and they paid the $245 for the two week rental. The scooter was a life saver.
