Raleigh Traveler Posted May 21, 2017 Author #29 Share Posted May 21, 2017 Thank you for the review. I am looking at the transatlantic in April 2018. Can you tell me how the weather was? Thinking about what I would need to pack. This was our second TA, one from each direction. The weather is a mixed bag. While around Florida or St Thomas, the weather is hot and sunny which means a lot of people on the pool deck. Going across will have the whole range of hot to rather cool with times of wind and possibly rain. A TA that starts or stops in the UK will of course have English weather. Unfortunately that means packing for all sorts of weather short of snow. Layers are a good idea. Westbound (Europe to the US) start in Oct or Nov. Eastbound (US to Europe) start in April or May. Days for shorts and tees and days for woolies and slickers.
rocky1 Posted May 21, 2017 #30 Share Posted May 21, 2017 Several have asked about laundry. Our $19.95 special on a bag of laundry was not discounted another 50% by being Gold. We paid the full $19.95 twice. We were on the same cruise, both gold status, and the gold discount was applied to the 2 bags of laundry we had done. We asked the Lattitudes rep ahead of time and followed his instructions (simply write GOLD along with your name and cabin number on the bag, no coupon required). He also advised us that we didn't have to wait for the designated "Special" day, which advice we followed, and we were charged only 9.95 per bag. Also, he said we could have done 2 more 1/2 price bags due to the length of the cruise, but we didn't need to try that.

rocky1 Posted May 21, 2017 #32 Share Posted May 21, 2017 Learn something new all the time. Next time we will write our status on the laundry form. Thanks for sharing. Maybe we were just lucky, or maybe NCL is still adjusting to the new perks. I actually expected to have a problem, and am pleasantly surprised we didn't. Sorry it didn't work out as well for you, but as you say, we learn something new every day!
NMLady Posted May 22, 2017 #33 Share Posted May 22, 2017 Considering Jade for next April, other choice is Epic for the start of our retirement year of travel. We have sailed Jade before but none of the big ships so the additional venues on Epic are enticing for all the sea days. But the short beds and bathroom design have us concerned. So here finally is my question - were there enough onboard activities to keep you occupied during the sea days? I am fine with reading a book all day but hubby tends to want a little more. ... Hi, Clay. Joe and I did the April 2016 ta on the Jade as well as the return crossing in October. Besides Trivia and various casino tournaments there were several other activities each day that Joe took part in. I mostly read. :D I think there would be enough to keep Mike happy. I'm jealous that you guys are cruising again. Our cruise budget went into remodeling the kitchen. It sure looks good and now has plenty of storage space. So it was worth it. Not cruising yet.....but if the stock market doesn't crash and everything else goes as planned, we hope to stop work near the end of the year and do a year of travel while deciding where to spend retirement years..... Can't believe you're retiring already. Time zooms by. Will your travel be mostly cruises? How fun the planning will be for you. Is there an area where you haven't cruised that you might do -- especially on a jewel class ship with The Great Outdoors.
DWFan Posted May 23, 2017 #36 Share Posted May 23, 2017 Thank you for the review - I will be doing the opposite trip this September, Southampton to NY. Do you have any pictures to post? How about you lucky dogs that will be viewing the Jade before my enormously long September wait? So excited!! :)

Since this is waaay off topic, I'll send you an email with our plans...but hopefully retiring early at fifty-nine and a half when we can start spending what we have put into the 401k. That is how we cope with the changes in weather -- changes sometimes in same day! Looking forward to the info. I presume you'll be cruising mostly on NCL jewel-class ships. We loved our two ta's last year on the Jade. Would cruise on her again in a heartbeat. NMLady Posted May 24, 2017 #41 Share Posted May 24, 2017 The weather INSIDE the ship stays rather constant. True, except that sometimes a dining room is a little coolish. I always bring a lightweight sweater to meals just in case. I do the same for evening entertainment lounge.
