Hi, Terry. Enjoying your report, as I always do. Sounds like a great cruise. I'm very interested in what you are posting about Oporto. I will be there on a Silversea cruise in September. I was wondering whether you did any of the ship excursions there. Thanks, Barbara

Good morning from the forward-looking, 11th-level Observation Lounge of the Silver Spirit! This a great, semi-secret location to write, watch the sea and enjoying the morning sun, etc. Appreciate all of the very nice comments and good questions. Keep 'em coming!! More details and answers on those later.

HAPPY 45th ANNIVERSARY!!: It’s Saturday, June 17 and this important day marks our 45th Wedding Anniversary. My wife, Penny, puts up with lots from me and this is the “official” reason for this adventure to see more of these special areas where we had not previously visited in Europe.

At 1 pm today, we are due to arrive in Bilbao, a former, somewhat down-on-its-luck town of northwest Spain. But, then there was the “Guggenheim Effect". It is claimed that never has a single monument of art and architecture so radically changed a city as done with Frank Gehry's dramatic, contemporary museum. Plus, there followed Norman Foster's subway system, Santiago Calatrava's glass footbridge and airport, the César Pelli Abandoibarra park and commercial complex and the Philippe Starck's AlhóndigaBilbao cultural center. Lots of success with “Star Architects”! It has been a cultural revolution that made over this industry capital of the Basque Country. Metro Bilbao contains almost one million people, about half the total population of the Basque Country. Lots of history and traditions here in the Basque region of Spain.

Early afternoon, we will do a five-hour ship’s tour to explore the beauty, history and architecture of the Basque Coast. We will visit the colorful, coastal villages villages of Bakio and Bermeo, seeing steep cliffs and isolated beaches. Bermeo was the provincial capital until 1602 and has the Gothic Church of San Francisco. It is billed as a picture-postcard village, famous for its fishing tradition and we will enjoy some pintxos at the marina. Then we will go to Guernica, a town was founded by Count Tello in 1366 that is best known as the scene of the April 26, 1937, bombing of Guernica by Germany which inspired Picasso's painting Guernica.

Early evening, we will be back in Bilbao, with the famed Guggenheim Museum open until 8 pm, we will do some exploring on our own. The ship does not depart until 11 pm. Sound like fun?

Yesterday, with expert local guide Italo Péndola, italopendola.com, we traveled to Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This cathedral is the final destination of the legendary pilgrimage along the "Way of Saint James", or "Camino de Santiago". It is believed that the remains of the apostle St. James were taken from Jerusalem to Spain and this is now his final resting place. This cathedral and this regional capital have spectacular and dramatic architecture. We also visited in the Hotel de los Reyes Católicos and caught some Galician Dancers. This impressive structure, a former Royal Hospital, is now operated as a Parador. Enjoy some of my pictures below and in the next post from yesterday.

PORTO TOUR?: Yes, we took a ship tour for Porto. We were docked at the commercial port town about a half hour from the star attraction of Porto. Porto is considered the cradle of the nation and it has also been called Guimarães. It was the first capital of Portugal. Its rich building designs represent the development of Portuguese architecture from the 15th to 19th centuries. Yes, we saw from several angles the famed double-decker D. Luis I iron bridge and that was in several pictures posted earlier. Our port wine tour was night next to the lower level of this bridge that we crossed. On top, this bridge is used by local transit rail cards. There is another historic bridge on this river designed by Gustav Eiffel in 1875 that is no longer used as a rail crossing, but it is protected as a historic structure.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

In walking through their narrow streets to the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, here was an offering from of the St. James cake that we enjoyed. Plus more pictures of the historic architecture here, including the fourth picture showing a statue of a former Archbishop here staring at us in a courtyard of a university building.:

Enjoying your enthusiasm Terry! Great pictures and fun photos. Brings home how terrific the Spirit is. We are all envious of your time aboard. Thanks for sharing.

Appreciate these kind comments from Spins in the Fort Lauderdale area. We just walked by "YOUR" Silver Suite 1114. Love that 11th floor, including for your great tip on the less-used laundry room up there. BUT, overall, those machines on this ship are both very slow and limited in numbers. Not the best part on the Silver Spirit!! Sorry to be so blunt. My wife is not happy about that challenge. Oh, sure the ship will do that laundry work, but, as an example, at $3.50 to do just one tee-shirt, the costs are pretty high.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Here are some more visual samples from in and around Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. First shown are the dancer inside the historic hotel. Fun! Our tour here also included visiting the historic and charming market in this town with our guide Italio, plus being with Sharon and Rick from Pasadena, California, in doing this private tour. This included sampling some wonderful regional cheese samples.:

On the Silver Spirit, our Captain is Michele Macarone Palmieri. Not sure how long he will be in charge of the ship. I think he came on fairly recently. Below is one of my picture of this Captain from February 2016 when he was in charge of "our" Silver Cloud during the ten-day South Africa sailing we did. Love his distinctive blue glasses??!! Will check more to see what officers will be on this ship for later this summer.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

For Athens and nearby, look at this earlier posting for many options and visual samples from this city that is so great for seeing its great history, style and architecture. This posting is now at 17,135 views.

Below is some added visual "eye candy" from visiting Nazaré, along the Atlantic Coast north of Lisbon. Like?

Will share with my wife the kind wishes from 57 varieties. I wanted to see Portugal, NW Spain, Bordeaux, Brittany, etc., but was using the 45th Anniversary as a good "excuse" to push and sell this trip. It worked!!

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Enjoyed a 14-day, Jan. 20-Feb. 3, 2014, Sydney to Auckland adventure, getting a big sampling for the wonders of "down under” before and after this cruise. Go to:

In connection with our visit with expert guide Suzana to Fatima, we then spent time in Nazaré, a very cute fishing village with beautiful Atlantic Coast views. This is where we had lunch and enjoyed the fish stew. This is a sampling of some views, including of a local lady in traditional dress selling her items in the scenic tourist area.:

With this being our first cruise on the Silver Spirit, one of “new” Silversea features of great interest was to sample the “Stars” Supper Club dining/entertainment environment. We did that last night. The verdict? Great, enjoyable and fun.

Not sure we will do it again, but it was an interesting and nice location with excellent food and service. Need proof? Or, photo evidence? See below. There was, however, a rather boorish, rude male passenger there in this room being excessively loud and difficult. His wife was totally embarrassed and trying to get him to shut up. He was beyond her control and finally they left. Not sure at what point the staff should “take control”. Not sure how much was his “personality” versus the influence of alcohol. Or, both?

We loved the opening drink offerings, options. Also, the wines offered were both from Chile and were very good. Nice piano and singing skills by Jonothan. And the charming singer. We met and talked with him during our Porto tour. He attended college in Ohio, but lives in New York City. Resides in the Bronx. Both had excellent voices and provided nice entertainment.

Silversea Sales Suggestion?: We noticed on this sailing, more “touches” of the large ship in pushing art and jewelry sales. It gets very old to see this "crap" pushed in the Chronicle every day, plus in “presentations”, etc. Yes, cruise lines are trying to make money, but personally we hate these efforts to push profit centers that are of limited interest to many passengers. Sorry to be so blunt, but Silversea should not aspire to be too much like Princess, Celebrity, etc., in these negative categories. Am I missing something?

More ship "food porn" to share later for Jeff and others interested in such fun visuals. Getting ready now for lunch and doing this famed Bilbao port, seeing the countrysides, shore villages of northwest Spain, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio.

Our third course was Rascasse with raisin brandy, Pike Perch Lavender with green asparagus and Tiger Prawn with Kumquat.:

As main course, it was Beef, Tamarind Venison and Veal, all with excellent and very tasty sauces, etc.:

Finally for dessert, it was Grilled Apple, Forest Berry and Cinnamon/Lemongress, etc. YES, was very pleased and impressed by the “art” of this food and its quality/taste!:

Hi, Terry,

Thank you for all the information about the Spirit. Not being a fan of small plates, I was unsure about trying Stars, but your images convinced me to make a reservation.

I wish Penny and you a very happy 45th Anniversary!

Congrats on your annie! You know, you're just going have to cruise SS more often in order to get that laundry at the low, low price of "free". Of course, you may spend in excess of $100K for the "free" laundry benefit, but just think of all the money and aggravation you'll save. [emoji6]

Thanks, Terry, for your reply about the ship excursion in Porto. Wonder if I could ask you a few more questions about it.

Was the excursion you took "Oporto Highlights & Tasting", scheduled to last 4 hours? If so, about how much time did you spend in the "wine cellar", and was it interesting? For example, was there a demonstration/explanation of making port, questions and answers, tasting of different ports, etc.? I have to admit that this is the portion of the excursion that interests my husband and me, and I'm wondering whether it is a major part of the excursion or a minor one.

Thanks again!

Best,

Barbara

For Barbara, our excursion was: Oporto & The Douro River (OPO-A). It was 9 am-1 pm, allowing time to come back on the ship shuttle (no extra cost) to see more in this extremely charming, historic town. YES, there was a nice demonstration/explanation of making port, questions and answers, tasting of different ports, etc.? On our tour it was a dual "prime focus" on BOTH the cruising on this scenic/historic town's river/bridge views, plus the port warehouse/tasting visit.

Have had two days of amazing pictures to share from doing yesterday's Guernica & Basque Coast, plus Bilbao touring and then today for St. Jean De Lutz and San Sebastian on both sides of the French/Spanish border. It has been a dream for capturing excellent visuals.

THANKS! This live/blog is now over 1000 views. Glad so many have dropped by, made nice comments, etc.

Happy Anniversary, Terry, and Happy Fathers Day to all dads in this thread.

Appreciate ALL of these kind comments and best wishes for our 45th wedding anniversary. Have shared with my wife!! Very nice!! Plus our Butler Dorothy Leonardo and attendant Jeffrey Relox had a super surprise last night. Lots of candles, rose leafs, cake, Champagne, etc. Wonderful!!

Just got back from exploring St. Jean De Lutz and previously the ship's San Sebastian Gourmet Tapas Bar Tasting (JEA-I) The classic beauty of San Sebastian is totally amazing. It was approximately a 40 minutes drive to San Sebastian, located just across the Spanish border. The kings and queens of Spain chose San Sebastian as their royal seaside resort, just as Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie had chosen Biarritz. Today, San Sebastian is the cultural hub of the Basque Country and an architectural showcase. We started with a photo stop at Mount Igueldo for panoramic views overlooking San Sebastian, its bay, beaches, etc. In the Old Quarter, we visited two different locations for tapas tastings. This area has more than 100 tapas bars lining its narrow pedestrian streets. There was also Rioja wines, or Txakoli. I will post those San Sebastian pictures next.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Dozens of nice visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc. We are now at 225,420 views for this live/blog re-cap, including much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

First are six visual samples from St. Jean De Lutz. It's a charming port town in France and where we were anchored. These visuals include is an interior from the church where in 1660 France's King Louis XIV married his Royal bride from Spain. Also a view from the busy beach there out towards where our Silver Spirit was setting. Plus, a few other visual samples of a wonderful Sunday afternoon exploring around in this charming town:

In San Sebastian, these basque tapas bars are famous for their pintxo selections. Great fun and wonderful tastes. Loved the experience. See some photo proof below as "evidence" that things were tasty and interesting. Plus some other sights will be posted from around town in classy San Sebastian. Loved this town, its architecture, history, food, people, etc.

From on top of Mount Igueldo, first here is the overall view of San Sebastian, its beach, mountains nearby, etc. So spectacular from up here!! Next, you can see the stone tower that sets at this dramatic location. In the final four pictures, you can see some of our success in doing the pintxo bars. This includes some of my personal picks with octopus, scallops, Sangra wine, etc.:

As added background on this Spanish/Basque "star", here are a few opening highlights from the London/UK Telegraph, Sept. 18, 2015, with this headline and sub-head:

Is San Sebastian the world's greatest city for foodies?

What makes San Sebastian especially appealing to the gourmet traveller is the quality of the everyday food

Full story at:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/spain/san-sebastian/articles/Is-San-Sebastian-the-worlds-greatest-city-for-foodies/

Opening story highlights:

"San Sebastian may just be the world’s top food spot. The small Basque city with its elegant Belle Époque architecture has more Michelin stars per capita than anywhere else in the world. Not only that, but it is home to two restaurants in the top 20 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants – Arzak and Mugaritz – with two more, Asador Etxebarri and Azurmendi, within driving distance. But what makes San Sebastian (or Donostia as it is known in the Basque language) especially appealing to the gourmet traveller is the quality of the everyday food, in particular the hundreds of pintxos bars, simple drinking dens selling everything from traditional rustic snacks to high-end gourmet dishes in small portions – and with miniature prices."

San Sebastian lives up to the "hype". Lots of love and do here!! Great late morning and early afternoon exploring in this gem of a port to visit. It's a "tough job", but somebody has to do "it"! Glad that we were able to stop here.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Panama Canal? Just completed Feb. 28-Mar. 15, 2017, Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco adventure through the Panama Canal with our first stops in Colombia, Central America and Mexico, plus added time in the great Golden Gate City. Lots of fun pictures!! Those pictures start on the second page, post #26. See more at:

Here are some added visual samples from exploring around San Sebastian, including the first picture being a view of Royal Palace for the Kings and Queens of Spain. If this town is good enough for them in the summer, then we can be satisfied, too, right? Additionally below are some beach architecture, churches, window/iron railings, food prep here in the market areas, etc. :

Terry, great views from San Sebastián! Your photos whetted my appetite both for pintxos and for the city. Hope to have the opportunity to visit sometime!

Appreciate Jeff's great comments and kind follow-up on these pictures. Jeff is a food expert and I like to attempt to satisfy his desire for "food porn". Jeff has been the prize winner, so far, with his cute comment on confusing my face with the lady in Nazare selling nuts there in that Portugal shore town. I shared what Jeff wrote and my wife just howled with laughter about his fun comments!! YES, for Camillus and others, I hope you do get to visit San Sebastián. It is a super treat for the senses, heart and taste buds, etc. Excellent star!! Well worth the effort to get there.

For Bilbao that we visited yesterday, the key goal after completing our Basque Country tour was to reach the iconic Guggenheim Museum. Its role in urban planning has been significant. Ship destination speaker Dr. Sherry Hutt detailed those key points earlier at one of her programs, plus in talking with her on the ship.

Below are some of early evening visuals from the Guggenheim Museum. Bilbao had 19th-century mining and industrial prosperity, but fell on tough times. Built by renowned architect Frank O. Gehry, the Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art has become masterpiece in flowing titanium and limestone reflecting Bilbao’s heritage with a suggestion of maritime shapes and sails. The building is covered with over 35,000 titanium tiles and pieces of glass strategically placed to catch the natural light.

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2262999

At the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the art is mostly about the building. Lighting and time of day when shooting allow for much creativity as to how you can capture this structure, its outdoor art, the inside drama, etc. Below are a few of my visual highlights. Outdoor as you enter is a large animal sculpture covered in colorful flowers. In the fifth picture, the large structure on the right is not a part of this museum, but a new, contemporary office, high-rise building. Not your grandfather's museum! Like?:
