paul929207 Posted July 29, 2017 #5 Share Posted July 29, 2017 We bring two of the small fold up kind. Throw them into our bag whenever we leave the ship with a possibility of rain
easyboy Posted July 29, 2017 #6 Share Posted July 29, 2017 There was none when we needed it. We requested from our steward and was told it is not provided.
OCruisers Posted July 29, 2017 #7 Share Posted July 29, 2017 We always take a couple of small fold-up umbrellas with us. :)
cflutist Posted July 29, 2017 #8 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Suites only. It was a golf sized umbrella so we didn't use it. Gorex and rain pants worked better on the glaciers of Norway anyway.
wheezedr Posted July 29, 2017 #9 Share Posted July 29, 2017 Best to bring your own or at worst to get a little wet.
DrivesLikeMario Posted July 29, 2017 #10 Share Posted July 29, 2017 The ones in the suites are huge and don't fold up, so if you're planning on using those, don't plan to put them in your backpack or daybag. They won't fit. Magellan's has some good ones that fold up and are good in wind: https://www.magellans.com/itemdy00.aspx?T1=MRU535+BK
Pam in CA Posted July 29, 2017 #11 Share Posted July 29, 2017 I lived in the Boston area for about thirty-five years and never used an umbrella. I find them awkward to use, hard to handle if there's any wind, and a nuisance to see under or over if you're looking at anything. They're a pain if you're getting in or out of a vehicle or boat and slows everyone down. I used a hat with a brim and a chin strap in all weather, even during snow storms. A waterproof jacket, a neck warmer, mittens and I'm all set. That's what I plan to bring/wear on my Alaskan cruise next April/May.

We took it ashore rain or shine. It was no problem. ;) It worked fine.
OCruisers Posted July 30, 2017 #13 Share Posted July 30, 2017 Sort of nice to have one for SUN. There are times when there really is no shade -- lines, walking from one place to another, etc. ;)

flamomo Posted July 30, 2017 #15 Share Posted July 30, 2017 I don't like using an umbrella anywhere that I will be part of a crowd .... awkward and inconvenient, and it blocks the view for others. That's why I travel with a lightweight hooded waterproof windbreaker, which fits loosely enough to allow for layering in chilly/cold weather. It weighs next to nothing, and I can roll it up snugly and tuck it into the tote bag that I always carry when going ashore. Another reason I don't like umbrellas in crowded areas is that I have nearly been poked in the eye a couple of times by someone else's umbrella. Rare geoherb Posted July 30, 2017 #16 Share Posted July 30, 2017 I bought us heavy duty rain ponchos for our first cruise to Alaska. They were great. The other indispensable thing for me is waterproof shoes. I saw a lot of miserable people trying to stay dry with little folding umbrellas and dollar store ponchos. cbelc Posted August 1, 2017 #17 Share Posted August 1, 2017 We prefer lightweight rain jackets and pants. That reminds me of the umbrella I bought on the street in Mexico during a downpour. It rained right through it- it was a sunbrella!!! Sent from my iPad using Forums
