calteacher Posted August 29, 2017 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2017 We have been to Maui a number of times and are interested in renting a car to return to some of our favorite spots. I am needing the location where we will actually be in Maui when we disembark. Thanks for any help you can give.
catl331 Posted August 29, 2017 #2 Share Posted August 29, 2017 I'm pretty sure that you tender into Lahaina. Does your itinerary show TR (tender required)?

There are no cruise ship-size docks on the island of Maui, so it's about a 10-minute tender ride to the Lahaina tender pier. Lots of stores, restaurants, Lappers ice cream and a huge Banyan tree there
Rare Copper10-8 Posted August 29, 2017 #6 Share Posted August 29, 2017 On this map, the ship's tenders will dock where the little red sailing ship is located near the Lahaina (small boat) harbor, the white "mini-me lighthouse", and the red-roofed Pioneer Inn
calteacher Posted August 29, 2017 Author #7 Share Posted August 29, 2017 Thanks. Thinking about renting a car and it seems there were cars to rent there which did not require a trip to the airport (across the island).

PSR Posted August 29, 2017 #12 Share Posted August 29, 2017 Unfortunately, unless something has changed, there are no car rental locations near the Lahaina dock. The closest location is at Kaanapali, near the hotels, about 5 miles away. I believe that they have shuttles, but they only appear at Lahania early in the day. They may come if you call, but it may take awhile. You need to check with the location to confirm. Also, they close early, like 4-5pm, which can be difficult if you want to tour all over Maui. You can drop the car off after closing, I think, but the location does not have any way to get back to the ships. Taxis may come if you call, but the rental location, if I remember, is located a bit away from the hotels. Last time we rented was about 5 years ago, so things might have changed. It was not real convenient.:(

igraf Posted August 30, 2017 #17 Share Posted August 30, 2017 (edited) It would be much better to dock in Kahului than tendering in Lahaina. This would significantly shorten the driving distances to Haleakala or Hana, and the vast supply of airport rental cars would be nearby. Also, there is also a real risk of being caught in a serious traffic jam when returning back to Lahaina. Not so much of a risk when returning to Kahului. igraf Edited August 30, 2017 by igraf
bonstersd Posted August 30, 2017 #18 Share Posted August 30, 2017 Uber is now available on Maui..they can take you to the nearest car rental place, which is in Kaanapali...I think there is an enterprise car rental too..maybe they will pick you up! RMLincoln Posted August 30, 2017 #20 Share Posted August 30, 2017 Check the Lahina Hotel, right near the tender port. I think they had a car rental desk there, expensive but so will getting a taxi from the airport back to the ship. Worth a look. m--

idiebabe Posted August 30, 2017 #23 Share Posted August 30, 2017 When we were in Lahaina the Tender Boats had quite a show from them. Whales were everywhere and some came up out of the water and breached! Pretty amazing sight to see to have a Whale breach right next to the boat while Tendering!

Federal regulations require that if a whale gets within 100 yards of your boat you must stop and wait until it decides to go away. Once on a whale watch boat out of Lahaina we sat still for about 20 minutes. They call it a "mugging"! :D Edited August 30, 2017 by jtl513

We saw spinner and some other type of dolphins from the tender on the way back to the ship in Lahaina. They were within 10 feet of the tender for about 15 minutes (we slowed right down). What a treat!! Watched their antics from the lower prom for a couple of hours that afternoon, too.
