GoGoLACP Posted November 26, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 26, 2017 Hi all. We are planning a cruise to Alaska for 2 families, total of 6 kids between the ages of 6-12 for August 2018. I am looking at two options, one on Royal Caribbean (Radiance of the Seas) from Seward and one on Princess (Golden Princess) from Whittier. Both have almost exact itinerary and very similar price. Do you have a recommendation between these two cruise lines based on the age of the kids? I am not concerned about other kids on the ships b/c we have plenty of our own to play with. I am more interested in the quality of the two ships and programming. Thanks!
Budget Queen Posted November 26, 2017 #2 Share Posted November 26, 2017 First comment I'l make, these itineraries are VERY different. Your "same" claim may need more information? Both are "family" cruises, all ages sailing. Princess has a ship naturalist on board, RCI does not, but I haven't noted them having any kids programs. With Princess, in Glacier Bay, Park Rangers and Alaska Geographic will board and offer the Jr Ranger Program. Bigger question- have you looked at Seward and Whittier? Both VERY worthwhile touring, determined transportation for the group? A lot more could be involved in decisions. I'd suggest, looking at all options and details. Have flights been booked? Certain days preferred over others? Same with Vancouver vs Seattle for departure and when?
Casey12 Posted November 26, 2017 #3 Share Posted November 26, 2017 Here are some programming Princess offers --- https://www.princess.com/learn/cruise-destinations/alaska-cruises/onboard-experience/ My Royal Caribbean cruise didn't offer anything. Not sure if things have changed. The glaciers are going to be different between the cruise lines and some ports will be different also.
petepie Posted November 27, 2017 #4 Share Posted November 27, 2017 Check Holland America as well, they go to Glacier Bay out of Seward and I've found their pricing to be significantly lower than Princess or RC for families due to lower 3rd/4th passenger fares in same cabin. Also check age groupings for kids clubs, sometimes kids don't want to be the oldest in their group - they feel like the activities are too babyish. Different lines group the ages differently. Rare Keith1010 Posted November 27, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 27, 2017 If this was me I would be going with Princess. Princess has a terrific children's program and also has been doing Alaska for years and does a fabulous job. I also would select it over HAL which was also just mentioned. I think that Princess should fit the bill for the entire family. Keith
