i guess the fact that no shorts in the dining room at dinner, which i took right off hal's website isn't good enough for some people! There should not be any questions about if shorts are allowed in the dining room. They are not. (period)

they do allow shorts on the 1st night.sorry

IN my humble opinion they are not allowed because if you allow shorts then men and women will come in with bathing suit bottoms. And then what goes with them, you got it the tops and then hay the question will be asked why not boxer shorts and tank tops, Just yesterday (not on a cruise) I saw a man entering a store in his boxer shorts, yes you read that right BOXER SHORTS. How long will it be before that happens? If HAL says no shorts it covers a lot of "shorts"! I am sure the time will come when the only thing that hal has on their website is. "Please keep private parts private"! And let it go at that!!!

With that being said shorts are perfectly acceptable on the 1st night.

I called our cruise consultant and asked she replied the 1st night is acceptable, but only the 1st night.

LOL, and we all know how accurate these folks are.

What she probably meant to say was : "I don't really know and I am too lazy to ask a supervisor, there is nothing about that on my computer screen, but wait a minute, I think I know now ... Yes, it's OK on the first night ... Next caller please!''

p.s. The reason it does not show up on a computer screen is that it is not written anywhere. It is a made-up rule enforced or not by the person at the door on any given night, including the first night.

You may be admitted to the MDR or not. Good luck!

Have you cruised Carnival?

You may have a couple of people dressing homeless.. but for the most part people are dressed nicely.

In fact, in all of my Carnival cruises I’ve really been surprised at someone ‘s attire maybe 5 Times. Maybe.

Yes, I have. I'm Diamond on Carnival and 5 Star on HAL. I've sailed Carnival since 2000 and saw the decline in Dress Code starting with allowing shorts in MDR. From there it went to the elimination of the tablecloths.

I do agree that Cruisers on Carnival definitely, for the most part, dress better on Elegant Night than what I've seen on my recent cruises on HAL. You're right that no matter what age, race or nationality they dress Elegantly for the night!

Iam sure you know more than anyone working for Holland. The person seemed to know what she was talking about, because she did say its perfectly acceptable on the 1st night.I told her all I did was ask the question and the board got crazy. Her reply some people on the boards may not like it,But Holland allow it.

Exactly!

And while there is no written rule nor do CC-ers set the rules. Remembering that CC represents something like 1 or 2 percent of all cruisers. Going by my own observations on many different HAL ships I say again - yes shorts are allowed on the first night (only).

Could you please site where you see the above information so the rest of us can access it on HAL's website?

I think we would all appreciate that.

This is how it started on Carnival! "Dress Shorts and Pullover with Collar" are acceptable. The next thing men were wearing spandex shorts, "run of the mill" shorts, etc. Then the Pullover with Collar was replaced by "Wife Beater" Tee Shirts and Tee Shirts. After a couple of years of that the Linen was removed from the Tables! I guess they feel why bother to have Linen on tables in the MDR when people are dressed as if they are on Lido or hanging by the Pool!

With the comments I'm seeing posted in the last year on Social Media sites and some of the "sights" I've seen lately on how Cruisers are dressing on the Ships in the MDR I think HAL will follow suit and be another Carnival in a couple of years!

Why are spandex shorts an inevitable consequence of allowing 'nice' shorts in the MDR?

Why will Holland become another Carnival if shirts with collars are no longer required in the Holland MDR?

Why would you think it wouldn't? We've all seen Tee Shirts in HAL's MDR with Jeans as well as men wearing Spandex shorts (not a pretty sight on some) around a HAL Ship during the day! Once the inch is given, the mile is taken which was my point with Carnival! Merely that!

Personally, if someone did not receive their luggage in time for dinner on the 1st Night, I don't see any problem with allowing them into the MDR. However, I do hope they stick to the rule of "No Shorts" for all the other nights!

tommy - sorry you got such an inhospitable response to your question. I thought this was a place where folks could ask questions and receive useful answers, not be attacked for asking the question. Dress code and food threads tend IMO to bring out the worst in folks. Hope you enjoy your cruise!
