Does NCL cancel cruises often?

We just received a letter stating that our September 8, 2018 cruise on the Gem NY/East Canada is being cancelled. We have never had this happen to us before. Does NCL do this often? It certainly doesn't encourage one to book early and make airline reservations.

If they didn't offer you the airline change fee for changing your flights, I'd give them a call and ask about it.

i feel you. i on the sept 28 gem canada cruise, that too got cancel. I booked that cruise last year before they changed the latitude program were you no longer get points for booking 9+ months in advance.. It sucks not getting those points, it also a pain that they increase the gratuity for the drinks/dinning packages. I feel like they should of honor all of my original pricing instead of either moving to a new book at higher prices or get a refund.

I agree!! We book really early so we can get the cabin we want. It was funny how we had two options, 1. Book on the October 8, at current prices, or 2. apply funds to another trip of our choosing. No mention of refund.

You should have more options than you listed. Email (text follows) states that if NCL does not hear from you by January 22nd your reservation will be cancelled on January 22nd. I'm pretty sure if that happened your deposit would be refunded or in the case of a cruise reward serving as the deposit it would be reapplied to your latitude account. If you don't like any of the options call the number listed in the email and ask that your reservation be cancelled and your deposit be refunded (or cruise reward reapplied to your latitude account).

Here is the text of the email we received today regarding our October 8th Gem reservation from noreply (NCL) regarding our October 8th Gem reservation received:

"Dear Valued Guests and Travel Partners,

Norwegian Cruise Line has important information for you regarding Norwegian Gem's 10-Day Canada & New England sailings from New York from September 8, 2018 to October 18, 2018. All guests booked on this sailing need to be aware of this change and travel professionals are asked to forward this information to their clients.

Because of a scheduling change the 10-Day Canada & New England sailings departing on these dates are no longer available. Norwegian is offering guests currently booked and fully deposited on this sailing the following options:

- Option 1: Move to one of Norwegian Gem's new Canada & New England sailings from September 8, 2018 to October 8, 2018 and your cruise fare will be protected.

- Option 2: Move to any available sailing in our fleet at the current published fare and your deposit will be applied towards the new sailing date. If you choose this option and are booked in an Inside, Oceanview, Balcony or Mini-Suite a $25 onboard credit will be applied to your onboard account. If you are currently booked in a suite (categories beginning with S or H) you will receive a $50 per stateroom onboard credit. Onboard credits can be used on any expenditure on the ship excluding service charges.

Norwegian will also cover up to $300 maximum per person air change fees. We look forward to hearing from you by January 22, 2018, so that we can modify your reservation. If we don't hear from you by January 22, 2018, your reservation will be cancelled. We are standing by to assist you on our dedicated support line at (877) 461-1160 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm ET Monday through Friday.

Below are the new itineraries for Norwegian Gem sailings between September 8, 2018 and October 18, 2018 for your reference.

We thank you for choosing Norwegian Cruise Line and we look forward to assisting you"

I would say “yes”. see on my experience. We had a cancelled cruise on the Epic in 2016. Norwegian offered several cruises for the same route and they honored our rate. The new cruise was slightly higher. We had an Oct 2018 Breakaway cruise cancelled as its being repositioned to New Orleans. We booked through TA and missed the email about the change so did not take advantage of Norwegian offers. Rebooked with another agent for this March. Glad we were not on it last week!

They cancelled my cruise on the Pearl 10/1 too.

I was booked on that cruise too. Of course by the time I got the letter they were closed so I will have to wait to see what can be done.

I just booked our flight home last week.

It’s probably just as well. When I called to ask about the 9-day cruise they mentioned, the agent said it wasn’t in the system and to call back after 24 hours anyway. Saved you being on hold for 50 minutes

I was looking at booking a hotel for a few days after our cruise. I have to have my holidays planned by January, so this is the latest I have ever been still planning.

Now I have to figure out if we can do the 9 night one. Does anyone know if it's still out of Vancouver?

You are outside of final payment. You can always cancel without penalty. NCL is basically offering you nothing.

This was our first time using Norwegian. Not a good start. The new itinerary really stinks because none of the 10-day cruises are a round trip out of New York. Our original cruise was September 18–28 out of New York. My wife really does not like flying, which is why the round trip was so enticing. Do you believe there is anyway I can get Norwegian to pay, at least partially, for a trip back from Quebec City to New York? I find it unacceptable that I would have to pay all of this extra money to get back to the US.

Well how on earth do they think we can make a decision if they don't even know anything about the new cruise?

Why not wait a day or two and then let us know when they at least have their :ship: together.

If they hadn’t let you know then this board would have been full of people complaining that NCL haven’t told them about it yet.

Just because you have never had it happen doesn't meant it never does. We have only had it happen to us once and was not NCL. Cruises are cancelled, regardless of the line periodically. As long as they give the passengers enough notice it shouldn't be a big deal. Normally the time line, unless an emergency causes the cancellation is 6 months or more.

re-read the letter from NCL: of course they are offering something. If nothing else protection of the original price that was paid, along with a few others things. No, they are not offering a lot, they made the change 9 months in advance.

No, cruises on all lines are canceled more than 6 months in advance for a variety of reasons. Just find another cruise.

same reason why i booked the September 28 to October 8 cruise. oddly enough, Princess Cruises seems to have a better price and deal for the 7 Canada cruise with a similar itinerary to the new 7 Day cruise Norwegian Gem in October. While it is less days compare to the original 10, i do not like the way how NCL is handing this. I booked last year to lock in at the old prices (gratuity, dining package, etc) and to get the latitude bonus points for booking 9+ months in advance and this happens..it stinks!!

I had mistyped September 8. We were on the September 18, also. I called to change the trip and they said they have no idea when the "itinerary department" will have it posted. :o
