Favorite Vancouver restaurants?

We will be visiting Vancouver for three days prior to our cruise of the Inside passage to Alaska on Infinity May, 30. We love all kinds of food especially restaurants that specialize in regional cuisine. Any ideas?

They are quite pricey, but oh the food! Fabulous fish and other fare.

The Pacific Culinary School has a restaurant that is just along the edge of Granville Island. It is excellent! Students cook and serve gourmet meals -- for very reasonable price. Hours are limited -- you'll prob need a reservation. One of the best -- and certainly most interesting meals we've ever had!

Hi there! Hope you enjoy your visit to Vancouver. We would also applaud C but in addition would like to recommend the following:

The Raincity Grill

1193 Denman St., 604-685-7337 (west coast casual, by Stanley Park, great wine list)

Blue Water Cafe

1095 Hamilton St., 604-699-8078 (seafood, yaletown area, amazing warm chocolate cake for desert!)

Tojo's

202-777 West Broadway, 604-872-8050 (sushi, very fresh and innovative)

Cioppino's

1129 Hamilton St., 604-685-8462 (Yaletown area, great Italian, lovely room, terrific service)

Vij's

1480 W. 11th Ave., 604-736-6664 (really interesting Indian food, chef has a number of well-known cookbooks, I am not that keen on indian food but i love this place)

Vancouver is a great food town, please let me know if you would like some more options. Actually one other place high on our list is La Casa Gelato for gelato. They make all kinds of strange flavours (ie lychee nut gelato) but regular flavours as well all fresh every day including the sorbetto. Probably at least 150 or so choices and they will give you free samples of anything that you would like to taste. My favourite is Tartufo.

Gypsy: Vancouver is a fabulous city in many ways. It is culturally diverse and friendly. There is amazing natural beauty vis a vis the sea, mountains, flora and fauna. The people! And my sister lives there, so I know it's not all bad. Although most West Coast types are a bit flaky

Vancouver has so many great eateries that it would take you weeks to try them all. The Vancouver Sun just published the Best Restaurants of 2004 so I'll include some of those. Also here is a list of winners from Vancouver Magazine for this year:

Vancouver has it's share of celebrity chefs and none is more lauded than Rob Feenie who's signature restaurant Lumiere, once again, won best overall restaurant of the year. http://www.lumiere.ca/pages/index.htm If money is tight he has a cheaper version next door called Feenie's.

John Bishop is another celebrated chef and his place is called Bishop's. http://www.toprestaurants.com/van/Bishop.htm

Best Hotel Dining Award went to Diva at the Met at the Metropolitan Hotel, 645 Howe St. The Chef there was head of the Canadian team that competed at the Bocuse D'or.

Best new Mid-range honors goes to Parkside at 1906 Haro Street

Best Sushi Chef seems to go to Tojo every single year and his place is called Tojo's http://www.tojos.com/

Vij is a very popular Indian chef and his place is called Vij's at http://www.vijs.ca/

Best Italian High End is Cioppino's at 1133 Hamilton. Great food and decor there.

If you don't want to spend a bundle on restaurant meals (and I don't anymore these days) the cooking schools can be very good. The Pacific Culinary Institute has already been mentioned (set menu and fixed price) and Vancouver City College has a fabulous Friday night buffet at it's student restaurant JJ's. Prices are so cheap and the food is so good you MUST book well ahead or you don't get in. JJ's Restaurant is located at Vancouver Community College's downtown campus at the corner of Hamilton and Dunsmuir. Reservations for Friday nights a must and other nights recommended: 604.443.8479.

 

On the low end my son and I like Gyoza King (every chef goes here to eat) http://www.frommers.com/destinations/vancouver/D36199.html, and Sui Sha Ya at 1401 West Broadway for it's lunch and dinner buffet. The latter has a 50 to 60 item lunch and dinner menu where you can order all you want to what. Lunch is only Can. $9.00 and the food is great. For a "Hong Kong" experience head to Chinatown at lunch and just eat anywhere you see a lot of Chinese eating. You'd think you're in Asia.

Thought I'd add a couple more thoughts Gypsy. If you lunch at the "all you can order" Japanese restaurant Sui Sha Ya, after lunch you can head west one block to Granville Str. You'll see the big Chapters store on the South side with it's extensive magazine and book collection and if you continue south on Granville (remember the mountains are always north) there's about 4 blocks of cool stores to window shop.

 

Star sightings in Cin Cin this week were Justin Timberlake, Carmen Diaz and Justin's co-star in the movie he's making here.

 

For fabulous pastries head to Senses - makers of the famous "Sparkle Chocolate cookie" which get shipped to stars the world over.

We always make a point of eating at the Bridge House . It is in North Vancouver. Right across the street from Capilano swinging bridge. Do not miss the bridge either.
