Ajh1986 Posted February 10, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 10, 2018 Hi All, I am considering a cruise on Epic in May and was wondering what people’s views were on smoke and smoking. I have read a number of reviews that due to the layout of the ship and that smoking is allowed in the casino the smoke smell seems to go round the restaurant and the surrounding areas. Also as people are smoking on deck I’ve read that ash and butts end up on balconies? We are both non smokers so are sensitive to smoke smell, and find it unpleasant to have the smoke smell around. Rare KeithJenner Posted February 10, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 10, 2018 Nobody can really say how much it will bother you. I’ve heard people say that they couldn’t stand the smoke in places where I can’t even notice it (and I’m a non smoker who doesn’t particularly like second hand smoke). For me, on the Epic the only place I ever notice smoke is when I walk through the Casino itself. Other say that almost the whole internal area smells of it. I can’t say I even notice it on the pool deck (there are some small areas where it is allowed) or any evidence of smoking on the balconies. Rare BirdTravels Posted February 10, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 10, 2018 Pretty much like any ship. The casino allows smoking. People violate the non smoking rules on balcony unless you call security to report them. We have sailed on the Epic 7 times and other NCL mega ships 9 additional times. Smoke is tolerable. cocod08 Posted February 10, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 10, 2018 I was on a TA in November on the Epic and I never noticed the smoke smell wafting into any of the restaurants. I did notice it as I walked through the casino some nights but not every night. I can’t speak about ash and cigarette butts landing on balconies but people aren’t supposed to toss cigarettes overboard there are lots of receptacles in the smoking area on deck. mrneva Posted February 11, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 11, 2018 I think the ventilation in the casino is quite good. The only place we smell smoke is IN the casino and by the pool on deck 15 near the smoking area. We were on the Dawn. The ventilation in its casino was non-existence. We smell smoke when we're just near the casino.
tel1024 Posted February 11, 2018 #6 Share Posted February 11, 2018 Was recently on the epic and we were only annoyed about the smoke while on casino floor (deck 6). since the aft side elevator doesn’t go to 5, we would go to 7 and down the stairs near escalator to 5 so we would spend the least amount of time on deck 6. Didn’t notice it anywhere else. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Pappion Posted February 11, 2018 #7 Share Posted February 11, 2018 The smoke wasn’t that bad overall on Epic. Certain areas of the casino were pretty bad but I didn’t notice it when we were not in the casino. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Zippeedee Posted February 11, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 11, 2018 I'm very sensitive to smoke and even in the casino I didn't notice it unless I went over into a smoking area. I spent a lot more time, and money, in the Epic casino than I did on the Gem for that reason.

shanley Posted February 11, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 11, 2018 I was on the Epic a few years ago. Hopefully they've improved the ventilation. I found the layout of the ship caused us to have to pass through or next to the casino a lot. I don't remember the smoke coming into the restaurants, but just the issue of it being smokey on your way there. Based on where our room was located in the aft we had to go out of our way to go to guest services to avoid the casino. We had an amazing cruise. But really didn't care for the layout of the ship and the central location of the casino. There are so many other ships to pick from, I am not likely to go on the Epic again. surfone Posted February 11, 2018 #11 Share Posted February 11, 2018 The smoke in the casino was the worse we experienced on any ship when we sailed on Epic back in November but even in Non smoking sections in the casino the smoke was so bad. Did not notice it as bad on the GEM but the Breakaway casino was pretty smoky, too. It may have been because there were more smokers that week. They did have a few tables that were non smoking which was nice. The casino was the only area that it was bad, wasn't an issue anywhere else. Sunshine&Margaritas Posted February 12, 2018 #12 Share Posted February 12, 2018 I know at some casinos on land if you're playing at a table and everyone at that table agrees for it to be non-smoking the dealer will put out a non-smoking sign. I'm not sure if it's that way on cruise ships but it may not hurt to ask. Everyone at your table must agree to it though if it's in the smoking area of the casino. Just wanted to add that in case no one knew. I smoke and I really dislike doing it at tables when they're full because even if people don't necessarily have issues with the smell or respiratory concerns it still is pretty crappy to be letting your smoke blow in someone's face or near them, especially if you've not seen them light up and can tell they most likely do not smoke. I try to keep my ashtray away from people like that and hold my cigarette away. This is generally the time I'll break out my e-cig and just use it then. The smell (if any) is less offensive and I don't have to worry about it as much as cigarette smoke. If I really want a real smoke I'll get up from the table and back away a bit. I don't know if the dealers on the ship's casino will allow this because my first cruise is coming up and I know they have the "don't smoke if you don't play" policy, however loosely enforced. I would suppose people would care less if I was actually trying to be considerate. It's a toss up to be honest, there's so many conflicting personalities under one roof for a week. I have generally found that if you politely tell someone that you have a respiratory condition they will try to accommodate. I know I do. A very pregnant lady sat down at my 3 card poker table once and I had just lit a cigarette. I promptly snuffed it out and pushed my ashtray away. She may not have cared but I did.
