Just1More Posted February 24, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2018 I see on some occasions the ship is unable to enter the Kauai Harbour due to rough seas. Has anyone experienced this and where does the ship go instead? Sent from my iPad using Forums
Rare Keith1010 Posted February 24, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2018 We've never had this problem. Keith
CruiserBruce Posted February 24, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 24, 2018 It will be a sea day. I would expect you will see more of the Na Pali coast. The opening is relatively very small, as its the harbor.
Astro Flyer Posted February 24, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 24, 2018 We missed Nawiliwili once due to strong winds making it too dangerous to enter the harbor’s narrow channel. Here’s a link to a discussion about this situation from the Princess board. Only one person had the ship cruise along the remote Na Pali coast but most were like us & it was only an extra sea day. That’s the only Hawaiian port we’ve missed during numerous Hawaiian cruises. https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2602517 We cruised the Na Pali Coast on the Golden Princess back in 2011. Unfortunately that was because we couldn't dock at Nawilliwilli harbor due to high winds, and the Captain did a circle cruise of Kauai as a consolation prize:
chengkp75 Posted February 24, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 24, 2018 Not only is it a narrow entrance, but there are a couple of wicked doglegs to get to the harbor. I think whether you sail the Na Pali coast depends on which way the wind is blowing, as if it too strong to enter Nawiliwili, then they will use the island as a wind break and sail the leeward side. In 4 years of working the ships in Hawaii, I don't remember ever missing Nawiliwili.

When our ship slowly cruised back & forth along Kauai’s leeward coast due to winds preventing docking at Nawiliwili that probably provided better conditions than sailing along the Na Pali coast.
