Snorkling in Key West and Great Stirrup Cay

I'm wondering if there is decent snorkeling from the beaches in either island. Trying to decide if we should do a guided boat tour out to good snorkeling spots, or if we can see really great stuff by just swimming out from any certain beaches.

In Key West, the reef is about 6 miles off shore, so you have to take a boat to get there. There is minimal snorkeling at the beach at Ft. Zachary Taylor Park, but I recommend taking a boat trip to the reef.

Zachary Taylor snorkeling is OK around the rock piles if the current and visibility happen to be agreeable. Unfortunately, being the meeting point between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, they are frequently disagreeable. A boat trip out to the reef would be much better if you want to do more than just get wet and see fish hiding in rocks.

Can't comment on Great Stirrup Cay - never been there.
