jessbaby Posted May 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 1, 2018 Do you have to purchase voom if you want WiFi service? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just add international service from your cell company for the month?
Clarea Posted May 1, 2018 #2 Share Posted May 1, 2018 Depends what you want. If you intend to use significant amount of data, then it will be less expensive to use the ship's internet service.
geomancer Posted May 1, 2018 #3 Share Posted May 1, 2018 International service will only cover you in ports. If you want to use the cell tower on the ship, that's a separate "package". So if you want it on ship, and off ship, you'd need both. https://www.att.com/offers/international-plans/cruise-packages.html https://www.verizonwireless.com/solutions-and-services/international-travel/ (See Cruise Ship section) https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/roaming?cruise=Royal%20Caribbean:%20Oasis

Havingfun2010 Posted May 1, 2018 #5 Share Posted May 1, 2018 Do you have to purchase voom if you want WiFi service? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just add international service from your cell company for the month? Cellular at Sea is the cruise line cell phone carrier. Sounds like you have ATT. So on ATT the plan you might be referring to does not include the ships system if your phone says "cellular at sea" as the carrier. What we do, is get the ATT plan for $60.00 a month if we are traveling internationally for more than a week, and use it in ports. On the ship, data is turned off. Much cheaper than the ships service. If on a short trip, ATT has $10.00 per day plan. So since I don't need data 24/7 and am happy with just checking items every other day, I avoid the ships, huge fees for wifi. HusemanCruzer Posted May 1, 2018 #6 Share Posted May 1, 2018 Personally I was never "thrilled" with the speed of Voom. Plus, the reason I cruise is to disconnect. I just needed it the last day to check-in for my flight.
S.S.Oceanlover Posted May 1, 2018 #7 Share Posted May 1, 2018 I had the surf and stream on Oasis and the download speed was about 4mbps. Thinking about booking Jewel. Does anybody know if it's as fast on Jewel as it is on Oasis? Bill
tvman18 Posted May 1, 2018 #8 Share Posted May 1, 2018 I have used the RCCL Voom wifi for phone calls, just place you phone on wifi calling and dial away. No $7.99 per minute phone rate, as long as you call the usa there is no extra charge(ATT). no need for the international plan. Works great. However, it takes many fewer people using it on Jewel to slow down to a crawl.
