chickadee1 Posted May 10, 2018 #26 Share Posted May 10, 2018 According to Marine Traffic, Star Princess is underway from Juneau using engine power at 18 knots. What an interesting web site to see where your ship is world-wide!
richsea Posted May 10, 2018 #27 Share Posted May 10, 2018 Since the problem is a Princess problem (as opposed to weather related delays) and theoretically one they could have avoided, an offering of $$$ is appropriate. I am curious. Howcould they avoided the problem?
chengkp75 Posted May 10, 2018 #28 Share Posted May 10, 2018 I am curious. Howcould they avoided the problem? I believe the thought is that since this is a mechanical breakdown, it is somewhat under Princess' control through "better" maintenance. It's about liability. Weather or "acts of God" are not liabilities for the cruise line, but breakdowns are.
katrina915 Posted May 10, 2018 #29 Share Posted May 10, 2018 Please keep posting on the Star status. My cruise is June16th and getting a little concerned. Thanks!
moki'smommy Posted May 10, 2018 #30 Share Posted May 10, 2018 Please keep posting on the Star status. My cruise is June16th and getting a little concerned. Thanks! I doubt that there will be anything to report of value till the ship gets back to port and they determine whether it can be fixed before the next departure or not. So the real information will come at the beginning of the next scheduled cruise--were they out on time, and is it fixed correctly.....

No, what it means is that if they had not been able to repair it, the ship would likely not have left Juneau. She appears to be headed for Tracy Arm, and USCG would not allow this with reduced redundency of steering.

Valiamo Posted May 10, 2018 Author #35 Share Posted May 10, 2018 We are well underway left Juneau at 4:20 this morning. They were working on the rudder both inside and out, and appeared to have equipment under the ship all of yesterday. As noted (thanks chenkkp75) we are running a quiet 18 knots, and are moving down towards Tracy Arm. It looks to be a great day, the sea is like glass and the sun is starting to shine, tho there are some clouds. 9:30, the pilot is just leaving the ship and we are heading back to Vancouver. underscore Posted May 10, 2018 #36 Share Posted May 10, 2018 Thanks so much for the periodic updates, Valiamo. I'm sailing on the Star Princess in just over a week's time and am nervously hoping everything will be resolved as it will be quite difficult to make alternate vacation arrangements on such short notice. My pleasure, the captain said yesterday evening that the repairs were completed early and we were travelling at 18 knots back to Vancouver. We are moving along nicely, and the seas are relatively calm. Hope your cruise is wonderful! Sent from my iPad using Forums

tothemall&beyond Posted May 11, 2018 #39 Share Posted May 11, 2018 Currently on the Star and we were advised last night the the ship is experiencing starboard rudder problems and our itinerary has been changed. The ship will overnight in Juneau and head directly back to Vancouver tomorrow morning. We will miss Ketichkan tomorrow and have two sea days vs one. We expect to be back on time, and the are running the ship slow. Princess has provided extra refundable OBC for everyone, and plus a future Cruise credit. Weather is super up here in Alaska and the cruise is over all very good. Sent from my iPhone using Forums And yet we're still waiting to hear anything about what they're going to refund us for missing LeHavre (the end port for 300 of us) on the Royal TA. It happened on April 29th. We disembarked in England on May 1. I emailed my letter on May 5th. Still waiting to hear.

Since it was related to weather it does not look good for any refunds or compensation. Unfortunately the cruise contract explicitly says that Princess is not responsible for compensation is case of change of port (even embarkation or disembarkation ports) due to weather. Problems due to mechanical failure is one thing, due to weather entirely another.

mindy2 Posted May 14, 2018 #44 Share Posted May 14, 2018 We also were on this cruise. Definitely very disappointed not to be able to stop in Ketchikan but what do you do. Other than that, the cruise was fantastic and the weather was superb. I hope to do a little trip report later tonight.
MsSoCalCruiser Posted May 14, 2018 #45 Share Posted May 14, 2018 A group of us will be boarding this Saturday. Do things appear to be back to normal? I hope so since I'm the one that chose the ship and the date, LOL. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts :)
