Thank you for the blog, but you never stated how you ended up getting from the bus station to the pier.  Did you end us paying the $5 for the shuttle?  Thanks... Jon

I’m sorry I didn’t make that clear.

Yes.…we did pay $5 per person for the short ride to the terminal.

The thing to do is a wine tour transfer from Santiago to San Antonio. You have to go through Casablanca and San Antonio wine valleys to get to the San Antonio port terminal. We did that with www.winetoursvalparaiso.cl. Michael is a British expat that knows the area very well.

I would make sure you are there for four days before departing or four days after arriving. So many people bypass a lot of interesting things to see like Valparaiso for example.

Remember there is nothing to see in San Antonio unless you like the casino. You are better off  arriving in Santiago, do a day city tour and maybe one other day for a Maipo valley wine  tour. Then a transfer wine tour to Valparaiso. Spend the night in Valparaiso, then the next day do a Valparaíso and Viña del mar city tour. The next day take another a transfer wine tour or direct transfer to San Antonio port terminal.

That's what i would suggest.

Can someone just confirm that the bus is waiting right outside the port when you arrive in San Antonio and you can board there and do not have to go to the bus station?  That would be great if anyone has ridden it recently. I'm arriving there a week from today.  Thanks so much--this thread is super helpful!

It isn't difficult to just walk to the bus station as well.    Coming out of the port,  simply turn right and walk down a couple blocks.   back of station is on the left.

another option-Princess cruises offered a transfer from SCL to the ship in San Antonio at 9:30 am the day of the cruise. We stayed in Santiago in a hotel for 3 days prior and took a taxi back to the airport for the transfer.

We might be doing the same thing.  Do you recall how far or the cost to go back to the airport to get the shuttle?  Princess wants $1,000 for Sheraton Convention Center for one night for 2 adults and a 3 year old granddaughter!  Web site  wants $169 for the same night and includes breakfast.

We stayed at hotel San Francisco 2 big beds, breakfast, right in historic centre, but be safe anywhere you go. Purse snatching. Taxi- to & from airport was reasonable ask hotel to get one for you & ask price. Princess rep will be just inside arrival area and will greet you, walk you to coach. Very efficient. Your luggage goes right to cabin. Sheridan is off a half ghway. HoHO bus went by it, but not close to walk anywhere we would want. Re: taxi at airport get / pay inside door of airport then go to taxi line outside. There are scams otherwise.

We will be flying into Santiago and then after a few days heading for San Antonio which seems to have replaced Valparaiso as the departure port.

I am losing sleep over which option to take in relation to getting from Santiago to San Antonio.

One option is to get a taxi from the hotel to the bus station in Santiago, then the bus to San Antonio, then a taxi the the port.

The other option is to take a private transfer direct from the hotel in Santiago straight to the port in San Antonio.

The second option is of course much more expensive, but it also seems to be the much safer option. Reading various threads in various forums the first option would seem to have its safety/security issues.

Any help will be appreciated. Particularly the experiences of those who have done this. What would you do? Many thanks.

We chose to take a private tour company when we disembarked in San Antonio for our transfer to the city of Santiago.  We, along with five other couples, hired Carola Neubauer and she picked us up at the port, took us on a tour to Valparaiso, a winery lunch and a short tour of Santiago before taking us to our various hotels.  She can be reached at Carola.neubauer@gmail.com.  We also used her for another half day tour of Santiago before transferring to the airport for our flight home.
