brian1 Posted June 15, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2018 Hi,just researching a fjords and Iceland cruise originally with Princess from Southampton, but found you guys do one for £2000 less with tips and booze included.Only 1 setback,it sails from Newcastle. We live in Italy so will be flying in to STN seeing family, but will not have a car.Train seems the best route at moment with the old farts railcard. Can you guys recommend the best route getting to the terminal and also hotel and shuttle recommendations etc, cheers,Brian. robanddiane Posted June 15, 2018 #4 Share Posted June 15, 2018 London kings cross to Newcastle takes just over 3 hours. Hampton by Hilton is opposite station and get shuttle down to the port.
brian1 Posted June 16, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted June 16, 2018 Hi,although we're only 35 miles from STN (no flights from there anyway) we have a flat, 100 yards from tube and we have freedom passes all zones.Flying from LHR looks cheaper than the train at the moment. Our end is not a problem,it's advise at the other end we need. The airport looks closer than the train station. Are there hotels with shuttles there also? Thanks so far,Brian. okavango Posted June 16, 2018 #7 Share Posted June 16, 2018 Sorry, just checked, the airport is twice as far. Yes ,but the metro service runs from the airport to central station every 10 mins ,from there you have the option of marella shuttle bus or take the metro to north shields and taxi to port

brian1 Posted June 16, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted June 16, 2018 Hi,does the metro go past the cruise terminal area.Thinking about Premier Inn now,it looks in a better location as we'd fly in the day before, cheers,Brian.

robanddiane Posted June 16, 2018 #11 Share Posted June 16, 2018 Could even use premier inn at the airport then metro and Marella shuttle on day of cruise. Nearest metro station to port is North Shields where you would need a taxi or another bus to the port.

Nearest metro station to port is North Shields where you would need a taxi or another bus to the port. Theres actually two metro stations (percy main and meadowell) nearer but they are in the middle of housing areas, no chance of a taxi and a bit far to drag cases, shields is supposed to have a taxi rank at the station so always the best bet. Looks a good way ,less than 1/2 mile from central, metro goes from out of airport to central with no changes or just taxi straight from airport, only abou 7-8 miles airport to prem inn. howmuch! Posted June 23, 2018 #15 Share Posted June 23, 2018 We stayed at the Premier Inn near St James Park (used to be a Coop). Great hotel, walking distance from station, and central for shopping and eating out.
Alltheworld2C Posted July 5, 2018 #16 Share Posted July 5, 2018 The DFDS ferry leaves from the same terminal as cruise ships and they run a shuttle bus to a stop opposite the main rail station in Newcastle, I used the bus one morning arriving back to Newcastle and the fare is about £3. If you google DFDS shuttle bus you will get all the information.:)
rattla Posted July 5, 2018 #17 Share Posted July 5, 2018 Probably cheaper to fly than go on the train from the prices I’ve seen!
Bill1954 Posted July 6, 2018 #18 Share Posted July 6, 2018 Stay at any city centre hotel and get them to book a mini cab to the port. They're cheaper than hackneys and it's only about 25 minutes, cost around £
brian1 Posted July 8, 2018 Author #19 Share Posted July 8, 2018 Hi,thanks for advice every one. Will fly and stay at quays if we book. All depends on our first cruise on D2 at the end of August. We have quite a lot of available OBC on Princess, but even with that,Marella is £2000 cheaper, sounds a no brainer, lol, cheers,Brian. SAM48 Posted July 8, 2018 #20 Share Posted July 8, 2018 It may be cheaper but won't be as good. We've just come back from the Baltic Capitals cruise. Food in Islands buffet was usually luke warm or cold. We complained twice and manager brought a hot plate of food but did nothing about the problem. It was cold again the next night. In the Main dining room food was good but service was slow, awkward if you want to go to the theatre. On the Dress to Impress night we had a nice meal there then they brought the coffees in cups with no saucers, they'd run out! On the last night we found the Italian, Gallery 47, which was good and you got more personal service from the waiters. We had a Junior Suite on Deck 8. Very nice, good sized balcony, plenty of drawer and hanging space. Entertainment was very good, in the theatre and also in other bars. Sea day travelling across the North Sea & in the Baltic was cloudy and cold, though it was hot and sunny when we got into port. Coming back it was very rough, we had gale force 11 winds.
