Bozzie67 Posted July 4, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Polite request. Would any present or previous Silhouette cruisers please post whether or not the World Cup matches are being shown in any public areas or on the Cabin TV's? I had planned on going to the matches but in view of the most unfortunate experience this week I am erring on the side of caution!
wendyam76 Posted July 4, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 4, 2018 According to Facebook posts the matches are being shown all over, even in the theatre.

Er12001 Posted July 4, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Hello! Was just on Silhouette two weeks ago (Jun. 9 - 23) and can confirm they have gone all-out and the Entertainment Court is decked out as "International Football Tournament" Central (they have to call it that since they don't have the FIFA license...), they have flags and a huge scoreboard outside Celebrity Central. Speaking of which, most games are shown in Celebrity Central (with full bar spread/service, etc) and on Channel 25 in your stateroom (Satellite permitting... for the most part it worked well, but it was cutting in and out during crucial moments of the UK-Tunisia game, which was shown in the Silhouette Theatre due to the high UK demographic on board) I'm sure they will continue to do all sorts of events and broadcast the games on this upcoming sailing. Enjoy the Silhouette, not only a gorgeous ship, but absolutely amazing staff throughout, I'm sure you'll have a blast! Happy Cruising, ek

phoenix_dream Posted July 4, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 4, 2018 The way it usually works is, if it is soccer or another sport popular in Europe it is on the TV's. If it is a US sporting event like football, baseball, or college basketball it may or may not show, even if more than 50% of their passengers are from the US (although they do have a Super Bowl showing and party - and may occasionally have one other game on). Can you sense the frustration? Hubby was going nuts during March Madness this year trying to find games. We ended up sitting at the bar in the casino, which was the only place they were showing them (which negates the usual argument, which is that they can only show what the satellite provides - obviously if it can provide viewing in the casino, they could have put it on the room TVs also if they wanted to)
Mr Sea Gull Posted July 4, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Just wondering as we are on the Silhouette this Saturday, what happens about muster as it is most likely around the same time as England kick off. Can they move the timing around?
Mynki Posted July 4, 2018 #8 Share Posted July 4, 2018 Just wondering as we are on the Silhouette this Saturday, what happens about muster as it is most likely around the same time as England kick off. Can they move the timing around? You could email Gianni Infantino the current FIFA president and ask him to delay kick off by an hour so you won't miss the game. In all honesty I think you'd have a better chance this way than asking Celebrity to change the muster drill time! :D It's a shame Sepp Blatter is no longer president. If all the passengers not wanting to miss the game held a collection between themselves offering to pay him for delaying the game it might have happened....... :p

I have been told as you have said it is truly dependent on what they can pick up on the satellite. I am very happy that I chose not to travel this month as I knew the football was important to my husband and I.

Toftwood Posted July 4, 2018 #13 Share Posted July 4, 2018 It’s only a football match but as you have a Cruise Director who is “an Englander” then I am sure your best interests will be taken care of. For me, I would much rather be at the safety drill ..............

Many of the crew members onboard are passionate about football - it's a global sport. American football (as well call it) together with the other games mentioned are niche sports which are barely watched outside the US

NCHPcruiser Posted July 6, 2018 #19 Share Posted July 6, 2018 The World Cup matches have been shown throughout the current Silhouette sailing. The evening entertainment times have even been changed a couple of times in order to show certain games in the main theater. Each Celebrity Today lists games and location on the ship where they can been be viewed.

The semi for Belgium and France is in St Petersburg as will be the match will for third place BTW World Cup players are in 9000% better condition than their North American counter parts. I have been on many cruises like that. I am not talking about whose sport is more important or more popular and I wish it wasn't assumed that I was. In those cases, I would expect them to show games that are important to the passengers onboard. Should I be on a cruise where that percentage was from European or other countries, I would expect them to show sports that were popular there. The line about what the satellite can provide is not always the truth. Our experience with the March Madness basketball games proved that - they had no problem getting reception in the casino bar so I suspect the rooms could have had it as well. My point is that, satellite permitting, they should be showing sports that are popular for the majority of their passengers. And I love the Celebrity crew, but TV decisions should not be based on what they want to see, but rather on the paying passengers.
