Medical facility on the Oasis

Has anyone had experience with the medical facility on the Oasis? I have intermittent atrial fib and therefore may need treatment should it not terminate spontaneously. Had it for a 7 years. My cardiologist has me on preventive meds and has already given me the ok to travel.

Can they provide IV meds should it be needed?

I certainly don't want to be evaluated to a third world island!!

I believe they have basic life saving capabilities. I'd strongly suggest travel insurance if not already purchased.

I went down there when I screwed up my foot. The facility looked pretty high tech and I did see IVs. It was an all digital xray which the are a lot of urgent cares around me. But it's not cheap. Somehow since I got injured playing a game royal was doing I was never charged but I saw some of their standard charges [emoji33]

joybaby, while not on the Oasis, I can tell from a personal experience involving my husband this past Sept on the Serenade, my husband suffered a massive heart attack after dinner and the care he received was unbelievable,.I do hope you will have an enjoyable cruise and not need any medical care.:) The cost of his medical care was extremely high but our insurance paid it, even though it did go to our CC on file, his insurance paid me for the cost which I in turn paid off the CC.

Worked in health care for 30 plus years and I have used the medical facilities twice for minor injuries. The staff were very professional and the care was excellent.

 

They definitely have a lot of equipment and high tech options. I think we sometimes forget that they are also the medical facility for the crew and any injuries, illnesses, etc. that may arise.

 

As far as costs, I did not find the visit to be expensive. I believe they use standard US insurance rates for "usual and customary."

According to a sign posted in the waiting room on Adventure, they use the Medicare rate guide. It was $132 to see the doctor.

They can certainly handle IV fluids, and should have the Calcium blockers like Cardizem (though it would be prudent to email special needs to get to their medical department and see for sure). However, if at the ship's doctor's opinion, you are not responding to available care onboard, you will be disembarked at the nearest port, which may well be a third world island.

If you are asking about meds to control a rapid ventricular response to your a-fib I suspect they can handle it though I would not ever speak for them. If you are talking about cardioversion then I would expect you will be looking at a shortened cruise and maybe on one of those "third world islands" that you are worried about.

They are not going to do a cardioversion for you on a ship.

 

Much to risky.

 

You need to get a PVI way before you cruise if you want to treat it properly....

I don't find that price to be out of line. We have to pay cash for all medical care and be reimbursed later as our insurance isn't accepted where we live but an office visit here runs $189 for our primary care doctors. More for specialists.

My sister got sick from to much sun, not enough water etc. Was dehydrated etc. Our vill from the doctor visit, IV fluids and some medications to stop the nausea came to $1400!!! Holy crap!!! It was outrageous

jchillan, last Sept following my husband heart attack, he was kept on the ventilator overnight until we got into ST Johns + IV's etc etc, that bill on my CC was $12,000. Our insurance came through and sent me a check to pay it. We were on the Serenade.

Have no idea how NCL figures their billing. RC has signs saying their prices are based on standard Medicare reimbursement and US insurance industry normal and customary billing.

 

Hopefully your sister had insurance and an itemized bill.

What do you suppose that treatment in a U.S. land based E.R. would have cost?

 

And was your sister's experience terrible because of the treatment she received, because of the charge, or both?
