? Renting a car in San Juan

I'm in the early stages of planning for our May 2019 vacation, most likely a Southern Caribbean cruise out of San Juan, most likely flying in mid-morning on Friday and sailing away Sunday. I'm figuring on about 1 full day (Saturday) and 2 half days (Friday and Sunday) in Puerto Rico.

I'm thinking we'd ideally do a bio bay Friday night, El Yunque morning and OSJ evening Saturday, and maybe a little more OSJ or just embark on Sunday. I am considering renting a car as this would cut down considerably on the cost of excursions to the bay and the forest for a family of 3 (Priceline cost of car rental under $100 for the entire time including insurance and we are a family of 3, so excursions add up).

I'm wondering, has anyone here done this and can you offer some advice? Also, I would like to pick up the car at the airport and drop it off at the pier, but when I put in Pan-American Pier (Royal Caribbean), I get Condado (near our hotel (Condado Plaza by Hilton), which is great, but would prefer closer to the pier). Is there a car drop-off place near the pier in your experience? Any tips on how to specify that is where we want to drop off?

Thanks!

Depends on who you are renting from. Hertz has a pick up-drop off location at the Sheraton Old San Juan, and it looks like Avis has a location at the Sheraton San Juan Resort and Casino and Dollar has a location at the Hyatt near there, too- the latter two being near the convention center near the Pan Am Pier.

We've used the Hertz location at Old San Juan many times.

I'd say your best bets are the one in Condado Plaza or Sheraton Convention Center (not the one in Old San Juan). There are no rental companies located within walking distance from the Pan Am pier so those locations will be the closest you'll get. You might want to call ahead to check if they offer any kind of shuttle service to the pier, although i really doubt it.

We have rented a car a few times in San Juan and explored beyond the city. It was worth it. The last time we rented we picked up at the airport and planned to drop off at Coronado. We ended up dropping off at the airport and taking a taxi back to the port. I know we paid extra but couldn't find the Coronado drop off and just did the easiest possible return. El Yunque is well the visit. The bio bay is exceptional if you can do it. I highly recommend renting the car and doing it on your own. FYI our iPhone had no problems navigating our trip for us.

Thank you! Which bio Bay did you do? There are 3 and I would love some guidance which is best and easy to do on one's own
