rayachit Posted July 26, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 26, 2018 I am sailing on Harmony in a few months and the wife and I both have Verizon iPhones and wanted to know if we can text each other. We will not have“Voom” because we only want to be able just to text, not using the web nor calling. Would anyone know how and if this works ? Clarea Posted July 26, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 26, 2018 You can download the Royal IQ app and use it to text for $8 per device for the entire cruise.

Clarea Posted July 26, 2018 #5 Share Posted July 26, 2018 Do I get this IQ app at the Guest service desk when I get on the ship ? No, download it now, it's free. You pay for the texting once onboard.

Biker19 Posted July 26, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 26, 2018 Would anyone know how and if this works ? Try texting via iMessage before paying for the texting option inside the Royal IQ app - you may find it just works.;)
RCCLNYMETS41 Posted July 26, 2018 #8 Share Posted July 26, 2018 Biker19 is correct, at least as of 2 weeks ago. We were able to text using imessage without any fees. Just connect to the ships wifi (no charge to do that)

Biker19 Posted July 26, 2018 #10 Share Posted July 26, 2018 Since when is the ship wifi free? Connecting to WiFi is free, it's accessing the internet that costs (via a VOOM package). There are a few things that work by simply connecting to the ship's WiFi (like access to RCCL related web sites).

Dollars to dimes says that something on the whitelist for not-paid internet, be it iQ or a RCCL website, uses the same port or IP range as iMessage, and that's why it can slip through. Not gonna argue, though!

Guessing that Royal contracts out the Royal IQ messaging to Apple and can't easily block iMessage.
Biker19 Posted July 26, 2018 #13 Share Posted July 26, 2018 iQ uses the same port as iMessage, and that's why it can slip through. Yes, that has been mentioned in the past and the reason it can't be "fixed".
