BOBBON Posted August 15, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2018 My cruise to Alaska will be at the beginning of September would it be better to take the excursion by plane or boat to see the misty fjords?
srpilo Posted August 15, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Check out "Island Air" online (I highly recommend her) Srpilo
Cruise_More_Often Posted August 15, 2018 #3 Share Posted August 15, 2018 I think srpilo means Island Wings (http://www.islandwings.com/), and I highly recommend Michelle Masden, owner and operator, too. She does a terrific flightseeing tour over the Misty Fjords. Between the two tours you are thinking about, the flight is by far the most interesting and is unforgettable. savannah2117 Posted August 20, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 20, 2018 If you haven't done so, check out Trip Advisor for reviews on float plane operators. We loved Michelle at Island Wings as well.
dmg1956 Posted August 20, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 20, 2018 We just returned (2 weeks ago) from the Inside Passage cruise on Eurodam and did the Misty Fjords excursion by boat. A big shout out and hats off to the captain and crew of the vessel. It was a beautiful, two deck, ship with great amenities and excellent food that was complimentary and for purchase. Having said all that I DO NOT recommend the Misty Fjords tour by boat. It's long and boring, taking and hour and a half to get to the Fjords from Ketchikan. We so no wildlife and while the views were quite nice eventually, it was basically a repeat of the sort of views we saw in Juneau and Glacier Bay. If we had it to do over again we would have stayed in town. Best you do the airplane version. Keep in mind that the float plane tour might be canceled if the weather is bad as in rain, fog, etc.
rsldonk Posted August 21, 2018 #6 Share Posted August 21, 2018 We did the boat and loved it, but we were lucky and had a super clear day. We had more time in the monument area than the planes did and I loved it. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Budget Queen Posted August 21, 2018 #7 Share Posted August 21, 2018 Nothing shows the vastness and beauty of Alaska more than a flight. Superior to any boat tour of Misty Fiords. I just flew again a week + ago. Went to Traitors on Saturday. :)
Brulefisher Posted August 22, 2018 #8 Share Posted August 22, 2018 We did a Flight over the Misty Fjords in late July, had a beautiful clear blue sky that day. It was spectacular! We had booked with Michelle with Island wings but when we got to the dock we found out her plane had mechanical problems. I hated to loose the chance to fly on such a perfect day, we had our flight to the fjords canceled in 2017 due to low ceiling. We got on a flight a couple hours later with Mountain Air and it all worked out. I would highly recommend it!
mary_228 Posted August 23, 2018 #9 Share Posted August 23, 2018 I flew on Seawind Aviation and had a wonderful flight with water landing. We were able to get out on a small island and even get in the water.
bottom-dragger Posted August 23, 2018 #10 Share Posted August 23, 2018 Nothing shows the vastness and beauty of Alaska more than a flight. Superior to any boat tour of Misty Fiords. I just flew again a week + ago. Went to Traitors on Saturday. :) +++ nothing beats a view for an airplane and, yes, thanks to our congress, it is officially misspelled as Misty Fiords. you get what you pay for...... boating up the Stikine river this sunday to collect 'shrooms and berries for our upcoming RainForesst festival. Yes, it rains here.
stpiloui Posted August 26, 2018 #11 Share Posted August 26, 2018 We too took the Misty Fjords flight with Michelle at Island Wings in June 2018. Great trip, highly recommend. Enjoy Alaska Sent from my iPhone using Forums
BritinSoCal Posted August 26, 2018 #12 Share Posted August 26, 2018 We've taken a float plane tour from Island Wings with Michelle at the controls and a catamaran tour with Allen Marine. The former is definitely more exhilarating, the later more relaxing and arguably more educational (on-board naturalist, informative talk from a native Alaskan). Totally different experiences, equally enjoyable...
hillbillycruzer Posted August 27, 2018 #13 Share Posted August 27, 2018 We booked through HAL and the flight was with Taquan Air in Ketchikan. Good flight out, very pretty. Clouds and rain came in as we started back. Low cloud cover caused them to cancel following flights. Be sure to keep cell phone or camera secured as they don`t float

Dancing Shoes Posted August 27, 2018 #15 Share Posted August 27, 2018 Just took a flight Monday Aug 20th with Randy @ Mountain Air. Was originally booked with Michelle, but she ran into some problems with being late due to heavy traffic in Ketchikan. So glad Randy was able to accommodate us. He pilots his own de Havilland Beaver float plane. I really like the view looking down on the fjords rather than looking up. Plus you get to land on the lake with Michelle or Randy. SkipsMom Posted August 31, 2018 #16 Share Posted August 31, 2018 Just returned from Alaska yesterday. We flew with Randy @ Mountain Air on August 20th and had a great flight. It was a beautiful sunny day in Ketchikan and highly recommend Mountain Air!
