Travel Warning to Cancun

I’m not aware of any cruise ships that stop in Cancun. You must take a ferry from Cozumel. And Cancun, Cozumel and Costa Maya and their state of Quintana Roo are NOT included in the travel warning.

(Snip from article)

“but the travel warning does not refer to the Quintana Roo/Cancun area.”

None of the bodies were found in the hotel zone, where Americans would most likely go.

The bodies were not likely to be those of tourists. Most killings are local criminals killing other local criminals, in their own neighborhoods.

Same as Chicago or Phili. But whose counting.

We are heading down for three weeks. Puerto Morales and Playa.

The initial USA Today article linking the 8 bodies found in Cancun with the August 22 update to the travel advisory was definitely inaccurate (what’s new?). The August travel advisory update was issued for Ciudad Juarez and not Q Roo, which has been at level 2 for some time.

And a subsequent statement from a Q Roo tourism board spokesperson that “The State Department travel advisory for Mexico does not include any tourist or beach areas and reaffirms that all major tourist destinations in Mexico are safe," is also very inaccurate and misleading, as the “major tourist destinations...” of Cancun and Playa Del Carmen have seen several violent murders IN the tourist areas. Most of these slayings are considered cartel slayings, but there has also been other violence, and the potential danger to innocent bystanders cannot be ignored.

But the media has once again - either in the pursuit of subscriptions using hype, or just plain lack of basic research - contributed to uncertainty in the minds of those considering travel to Q Roo, especially new visitors. There are several posts on other travel forums from folks canceling trips to Q Roo based on the USA Today article...a shame...

So to clarify, the actual travel warning for Q Roo has not changed. Below is the Level 2 advisory for Q Roo from the US State Department:

Quintana Roo state – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution due to crime.

According to Government of Mexico statistics, the state experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens. Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred.

There are no restrictions on U.S. government employees for travel in Quintana Roo state, which includes tourist areas such as: Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya.

These threads with misinformation create a real mess for anyone who considers them accurate.

We decided against a cruise or an AI. Heading down to Cancun late this month for two weeks. A week in Playa and a week somewhere else-probably Puerto Morales or Isla Majeures.

So, I wonder what State would say if the 63 shootings in Chicago was in another country? 66 shootings in the first weeekend of August, 12 of them were fatalities.

We have been in Quintana Roo for just under two weeks.  We felt safer in Playa,,Porto Morales and Cancun/Isla than we do in Miami, LA, or NOLA. Independent travel. Only regret is that we only have five days left before returning home to cold weather.

We haven taken highway buses, collectivos, taxis, local buses.  Absolutely no issues.

So much so that we plan to return next year to the Yukatan for a longer period.
