Is a social security card required upon check in anymore. I don't see where it is listed as needing it but know I have shown them on past cruises.

it is not a legal travel document, it can not be used. Here is a list of IDs that is acceptable for a cruise: https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3409/~/travel-documentation%3A-u.s.-citizens

I've never carried mine with me, ever. That's a number I wouldn't want stolen if someone were to steal my purse or wallet. I can cancel my credit cards, but it's kind of hard to cancel a SS card. Mine is locked away.

Agree. Use something on the list provided above. Social Security card won't be accepted, and shouldn't be offered.

You might have shown yours, but it has never been required. In fact your SS card is one of the most dangerous things you can carry with you when it comes to identity theft.

 

Leave it home in a secure location.

I've never been asked to show my SocSec card or asked for the #. Seems strange to me.

Not to get off topic but, do you not need your social security card to collect large casino winnings on the ship/island?

I would say no as very few people carry the Social Security card with them. I believe in Las Vegas you have to feel out an IRS form to collect large winnings, so I can imagine the on-board casino may require this also.

 

At the least when you re-enter the US, if you have more than $10,000 dollars you have to declare it.

On Carnival I've been asked for my SSN (not the card) after a jackpot, on Celebrity, no.

 

Wish I could say I had jackpots on other lines, sadly no.

No. You need to provide your SSN but don't need your card. The IRS will let you know if you provided the wrong one. :)

I agree that you do not want to ever carry your SS card with you. Having won some jackpots, I've been asked for my SSN and had to show my driver's license. That's all for IRS purposes. 46 cruises and have never been asked for my SS card when checking in.
