Running up the ROCK of Gibraltar-any suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Ill be visiting Gibraltar on my upcoming cruise. I have it on my bucket list to run in every country I visit. The ROCK is quite impressive. Tell me, have you run up the ROCK? Walked? Best route? Have suggestions for your fellow runner? Let me know, I have three weeks. Thanks

Hellfire, even I could run up it in 3 weeks :)

Or did I misunderstand your post ? :o

The most rewarding is to go up the Mediterranean Steps, but running up them isn't really an option. They start near the Jewish monument - the first stop on the taxi tour.

It's worth considering taking the cable car up, then running DOWN.

Or take a taxi to the Great Siege Tunnels, then run down from there - the road isn't as twisty as at the southern end of the Rock, and you can take a break at the Moorish Castle just as you reach the built up area

JB :)

If you run regularly, it will not be a problem. I recall doing a run many years ago and taking 34 minutes from town (sea level) to the top of the rock.

So assuming you are in your running togs, you can either leave the ship running for a longer run, or you can walk along the flat ?1.5 km road into town and catch a number 2 bus at the Market place and ask the busdriver to drop you off at the old Casino. Then you will see the road that goes up (and up) to the Upper Rock. If you don't plan on visiting any of the tourist sites, when you get to the entrnce to the Nature Reserve just ask for the pedestrian entrance. It is perhaps a couple of pounds or less. Keep on going up the road, and up past St Michael's Cave. Keep on going. Your legs are getting like jelly at this point but not too far. Then you go towards the Cable Car and you are at the highest point. Hopefully you brought some water because you will need it. You will have really experienced Gibraltar.

John Bull - running the Med Steps is an option. It is a keep fit option for some. However running is not recommended for the first time.

We walked the Mediterranean steps and just to be clear, they were more like the Mediterranean Goat Path in a lot of places. There was also quite a bit of brush along the way. An actual run would be difficult in some parts and downright dangerous in a few but if you do a lot of rugged trail running, in might be an option for parts. The views were wonderful and you got away from a lot of the crowds.
