AppleTV or Roku - can we hook up to TVs onboard river cruise - Avalon

Recommended Posts

First time European River cruise, on Avalon. Wondering if, since we have free wifi on board, if it would ok/beneficial/workable to bring either our Roku or our AppleTV device to hook up to our in-room TV.

i guess an alternative would to see what we can get from Netflix or Prime Video on board.

Does anyone here have any experience or suggestions on this?

It varies widely but most cruise ships, hotels, etc. Lock down the inputs on their TVs.

Even if you can connect it, your AppleTV or Roku will need the quality of connection you are unlikely to get on the ship. In addition you will need a travel router to stream/mirror from your device.

Best is to use a cell phone, tablet, or the Netflix APP on Windows 10 to download what you want for offline viewing before you go. On a Mac, you need to download videos from iTunes because there is no Netflix app. You cannot download from the web version.

You could run Parallels or VMware on your mac and run the netflix Windows 10 app, but that seems a bit excessive.

If you have a lightning HDMI adapter, you could bring it and a light hdmi cable to play to your TV if it supports it. I have seen reports that it may not work if you have upgraded to iOS 12 though https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/MD826AM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter.
