MSC versus NCL

Our friends 10 year old has insisted on going back to his cabin to see if their luggage had arrived! He has announced that he wants to make sure that it is in the cabin as there are a lot of people on board who have been drinking all day and they may be drunk and take his suitcase!

NCL changed things a couple years back - Europe bookings have all the taxes/surcharges/gratuities whatever people argue to call them on the NCL boards are rolled into your price. In the US the cruise prices are reportedly less but you are charged 20% of the "value" of the various packages you pick which add hundreds of dollars.

Can imagine that. Also a reason why we never consider booking from Singapore website. You would expect that consumer protection should be very good there, but it is not. From my experience only a European booking (also not all countries) protects you from crazy taxes and fees and tips added to your bill. We really want to have everything rolled into the bill, for this the cruise price certainly can be higher.

Dinner last night was good I liked The anytime dining but we can do that on MSC with the Aurea package.

We have just set sail by the way it is almost 5am here in Vancouver and we have had to wait for low tide so the Bliss can sail under the Lions Gate Bridge. That is why we are awake.

My musings will only be on Port days as I have not bought the Wi-fi package this time as it is a lot more expensive than MSC!

We wandered up to the Observation lounge last night and that is a lovely space I think that NCL May have gone to the same shop as Mrs MSC to buy the chairs etc...

The laundry is good value we get a bag to stuff for $20 but the package on MSC is also good especially as it is over night and you can sent things more than once. On here we have to send by midday today and it won’t be back till Thursday and we only boarded yesterday.

You will really be shocked by the difference in the Beverage Package prices. Much, much more on NCL.

We have booked from the U.K. where the price is Inclusive of beverage package and all tips and service charge etc.

One thing that is good on NCL is there is a coffee maker in the cabin! Happy days! It’s a bit different sat on the balcony now to my mornings in the Caribbean though! It is cold! I am in my pyjamas ugg boots and wearing a down jacket and am wrapped in a beach towel! I have my coffee and my binoculars.. please let me spot a whale...

NCL is all over the board on how long the bag takes to come back. Usually it is quicker than they say, but not always.

What do you mean by MSC you can resend an item?

I think he means if you bought the drink package MSC vs NCL. If you buy it on NCL it is like $90 pd/pp plus 20%. Drink price limit $15.

On MSC you buy laundry package by the number of items, 20 / 30 / 40 pcs. During the week you can send multiple times items. We had the 40pc package and sent 17 and 23 pieces on two days. Bag must be ready for pick-up at 10:00am and laundry will be delivered the next day by 5:00pm. It worked perfect for us. We already pre-paid laundry package for a cruise in April 2019. It is very convenient when you have additional vacation after the cruise.

We will be sailling for the first time on MSC this month. We have been on several NCL though most recent NCL ships are our favorites! From what Ive read about the MSC Seaside, there are a few things I anticipate missing on the MSC.

What are the things you think you will be missing on MSC? I have cruised both cruise lines in the past year. They are somewhat different, but both are very enjoyable. Remember, a cruise is what you make it. Look forward, not back. HAPPY CRUISING!

Thanks. It was sounding like if you had one item cleaned you could send it in for cleaning again which seemed strange. Funny that someone would actually keep track of it though as if you had sent all in at once it makes it easier for them than having to track your garment balance.

Laundry must be one area MSC doesn't seem too interested in as it is more expensive than NCL and it isn't given as any type of perk with either a suite or member status.

Such as? We sailed MSC first time last year and many prior NCL but really nothing we missed other than maybe larger suites and free laundry.

The items are processed all the same as per laundry order sheet (washing, dry-cleaning, on hanger, folded, etc). Each item counts against your package, it is done via computer not manually. The value of the laundry package is quite good since you can have items dry-cleaned which are higher in price. The passenger is flexible with the laundry package in sending items to laundry, no need to wait until the bag is full.

That's two of us who are asking the same question. I didn't find anything major in differences between the two lines. Apparently you didn't either.
