Tobacco or Warwick? /

Two different beach experiences to decide between. Tobacco Bay is on St. George’s. On the other end of Bermuda. It is a small beach. Main claim to fame is the snorkeling. There are facilities, food and drinks, and chair rentals. Can get crowded because it is small. Warwick is a larger beach. It is a pink sand beach. No chair rentals or food concessions. There are some porta potties. Does not get crowded. Closer to the Dockyard.

If you want to snorkel. especially if you lack snorkeling experience, go to Tobacco Bay; otherwise, go to Warwick and then walk to Horseshoe Bay. You'll have more beach time at Warwick since it is closer to the Dockyard.

Sbts - you give good advice to cruisers. By the way, can one take the minivan to Horseshoe Bay and walk to Warwick or the other way is better? How to look for the walking path or is it just walk on sand? And with the upcoming cruise that dock in the late evening, anything to see at night or to do? Thanks.

You could take a mini-bus going to Horseshoe Bay and as you board the mini-bus, ask the driver if he will drop you at Warwick. The fare would be $1 more. If that does not work, take the public bus (route #7), and ask the driver to drop you at the bus stop closest to the access road to Warwick Long Bay.

 

You start at WLB because you want to end at HSB which has a concession stand, showers, and restrooms. Plus, you'll find waiting mini-buses and taxis in the parking area. WLB does not have any of these except for porta-potties.

 

I posted a satellite photo of the beach path here. Only a small portion of the paths are on beach sand.

 

At night, the Frog & Onion Pub may have live music and local brew. Or visit Club Aqua at Snorkel Park.

Doing either way is good but since there are facilities and a concession at Horseshoe, plus minivans for returning to the Dockyard are readily available in the parking lot at Horseshoe, make it preferable to start at Warwick and end at Horseshoe in my opinion. The distance is not long so a round trip from Horseshoe and back is also an option. As far as the walking route being on beach sand or the trails, it is a combination. It depends on the tides how much of the walk can be on beach sand or walking up and around on a trail.

 

At the Dockyard in the evening there are some bars/restaurants. Frog and Onion, Bone Fish have music in the evening. Right off the dock there is a floating bar pirate ship, Calico Jacks. There is a night club at the Snorkel Park. There is Fun Golf(mini golf) next to Snorkel Park.

If you visit St George’s one day then certainly stop and enjoy Tobacco Bay, you can walk from town or taxi. Very crowded beach because it is a small cove. But if just choosing between these two beaches Warwick Long Bay would definitely be our choice over Tobacco Bay (or HSB).

 

WLB is a gorgeous, pink-hued sand beach and not crowded because there are no amenities. The water and rocks make for a beautiful setting. We can lay there for hours listening to the waves and watching the long tails swoop in and out of the rocks. Bring a towel, water, and maybe a small picnic and enjoy a beautiful beach away from most of your fellow cruisemates. And Jobson’s Cove is an intimate cove just a short walk from WLB you should not miss. When staying on the island, even with several cruise ships in port we had both beaches to ourselves most days...

 

You can get dropped by bus within a short walk down to WLB and enjoy that beach in relative quiet along with Jobson’s Cove. Then if you want the HSB busier vibe with lounges and other amenities you can walk from JC. Two very different experiences in one day ;)

In your other thread, I offered 3 'what to do' suggestions:

Climb Gibbs Lighthouse for a great view of Bermuda. Walk the portion of Railway Trail that is on Somerset Island. Tour Fort Scaur. Charles4515 suggested Fun Golf (mini golf) next to Snorkel Park at the Dockyard. Also, you could visit the National Museum of Bermuda at the Dockyard.

If a nice day be sure to take some drinks and relax at WLB and enjoy the views, don’t be in a hurry to leave!

Leave plenty of time to return to the ship to get cleaned up then enjoying some music and dancing at the F&G.

We did just that. That was pretty much our day. Do not miss Jobson's Cove on your way back to HSB. The parrot fish are amazing!! Went back to the ship where we were docked for the night and then did the Gosling's Rum Sunset Cruise. Highly recommend!
