Car hire for a day in Tauranga NZ

Just wondering if anyone had hired a vehicle for the day rather than relying on expensive tours? Thinking of driving ourselves to Hobbitown/Rotarua while in port. We are Aussies so no problem driving on the left, etc.

We have hired a car or van in Tauranga (depending on how many people we have with us). Each time we have used Pegasus. They brought the vehicle either onto the wharf, or in later times, to just outside the wharf gates. At the end of the day, we are asked to leave the vehicle and give the keys to the guard at the entrance to the wharf. With this arrangement, we don't take time collecting and returning the vehicle. For our own protection, we take several photos of the vehicle after we lock it so we could (if necessary) prove that there was no damage. Cameras record the time the photos was taken. However, with hiring from Pegasus in different ports in NZ on a few different cruises, we have never had a problem.:D

When there last, I used Rite Price Rentals. They are located very close by, and they put on a shuttle for the return trip from the wharf to their office. Very friendly staff and late model, clean vehicles.
