drumming cruisers Posted October 16, 2018 #1 Share Posted October 16, 2018 Just got back from Canada/new England cruise on Escape. They have paper straws and wooden stir sticks. Cruise was good. Cabin steward was awful. Never "made bed" just threw duvet cover over wrinkled up sheets. DH had to leave a note every night for coffee and creamer. Seemed like our belongings had been rifles thru. Clothes on shelves, and other items. She moved curling iron and I couldn't find it. She put it in enclosed shelf under the tv where the magazines are stored. Could have started a fire if it was hot. We were in cabin 14856, her name was Melody. Was tempted to take her tips away but didn't. We have never had a complaint about a cabin steward before. Most are wonderful! She was just odd. Specialty restaurants were great. Choir of Men was fantastic. Menu was salad, Beef Wellington, Lemon cheesecake. We thought it was great. and lots of beer. Escape was very crowded, more than the last time we were on it last February. Was or 14th NCL cruise. We liked Bliss better. FANTASTIC restaurants on that ship! DMH15 Posted October 16, 2018 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2018 Of course the "TIPS" are a pool of which many participate... glad you did not take away. Did you attend the Cruise Critic Meet & Greet? Did you receive the Hotel Director's Information? He is the one you should have visited with to voice your concerns. The bed-making thing would have bothered me too.
zqvol Posted October 16, 2018 #3 Share Posted October 16, 2018 The "TIPS" are not gratuities, they are service charges that go to NCL. Taking them away from a person deosn't impact their salary or compensation, unless it happens over and over again.
snownow Posted October 16, 2018 #4 Share Posted October 16, 2018 I would have made a comment to the hotel director or customer service. They handle that stuff pretty quickly.
cb at sea Posted October 16, 2018 #5 Share Posted October 16, 2018 The DSC IS "tips"....just because they call them something other than "gratuities" doesn't make them different. They simply want their passengers to pay what's expected.

Rare BirdTravels Posted October 17, 2018 #7 Share Posted October 17, 2018 Like all shipboard issues, the ONLY time to address them is whilst you are on the ship. A quick comment card to the hotel director dropped in the box at guest services is addressed within a few hours. Not much can be done about Melody here on CC. Gershep Posted October 17, 2018 #8 Share Posted October 17, 2018 Glad to hear that there were paper straws.
OCruisers Posted October 17, 2018 #9 Share Posted October 17, 2018 Paper Straws are better than no straws at all! 😉
cathi007 Posted October 17, 2018 #10 Share Posted October 17, 2018 I just purchased re-usable straws from Amazon, it comes with like 10 straws and 2 straw cleaning brushes...I'll use those
Rare BirdTravels Posted October 17, 2018 #11 Share Posted October 17, 2018 It is really strange. We grew up with paper straws and thought plastic was weird and different. Now, we would prefer to do without a straw rather than using a paper straw.
Medtech2 Posted October 17, 2018 #12 Share Posted October 17, 2018 Funny our last steward behaved exactly like this plus did not make the towel animals. The last night I did write a detailed note to the HD to alert him of the problems. I'm noticing many more complaints about stewards and while I don't like it quite frankly I think it's stemming from the change in corporate culture. They are being pressed to do more in less time and depending on the personality some may be passive aggressively fighting back, so to speak. Just my opinion
