canada ATT service

my gf went into an ATT store. said she's going on a cruise and once she's in canada will her phone work. they said yes.

 

while i'm glad the answer is yes, i'm just wondering is there really any plan in the USA that includes calling from canada in it? happy didnt have to pay more but still i kind of am leery of that answer.

 

2nd question. assuming we get into port and  have no service, is there a way to get it to work for 2 days. we need the GPS for the car rental so we dont get lost 🙂

We have an ATT prepaid plan and it mostly worked last year on a trip to Nova Scotia and PEI.  There were some isolated areas that were dead zones for us most notably the Parrsboro, NS area and Cape D'or, NS area.  We had good coverage in Halifax and Peggy's Cove.  We did not have any other problems or surprise charges and we were calling and texting family in the US nearly daily on our trip.

You will generally roam on Bell Canada when you are with AT&T as they have an agreement (in the Maritimes it's Bell Aliant) - this will most likely not be included for free.  Calls etc shouldn't be too much, it's the data roaming you'll have to watch.  AT&T should be able to tell you what your plan includes while in Canada - she could also look into a pre-paid plan and have her phone unlocked / use pre-paid temporarily to avoid any unexpected charges.  They'll have wifi in a lot of places too unless you're out driving in the countryside.

We have ATT. We added international to include Canada and Mexico. It gives us free data and text, just not calling.
