Taking candles on board - what will happen?

Recommended Posts

The cruise line can't possibly write rules to cover EVERY scenario, so they reserve the right to hold or discard items.  We've seen the 'naughty room' where items are stored... loads of power cords/surge protector strips, plus coffee makers and rice cookers (seriously!)  We once had an extension cord get through screening, but then get removed by our steward, which is why I got to visit.

The option to discard is for alcohol (friends said they dump out booze in containers that aren't factory sealed) and anything else that might leak, melt, rot, or otherwise cause a mess.  Plus items that you can't take off the ship in other ports, like fresh flowers, fruit, etc.  There are different stories about sealed alcohol -- some claim that the new bottles sometimes make it to the crew area instead of being dumped... no proof one way or the other.

Your candles would be confiscated - if they are detected at all - and held for you to pick up the last morning.  Since they won't cause a mess sitting in a box in the naughty room, odds are very good that you'd get them back unharmed.

I wouldn't recommend trying to hide or conceal them in your luggage, nor would I point them out.  However, I do recommend leaving them in your luggage in your stateroom.  The room stewards are required to confiscate anything they SEE in your stateroom.

Will you have time in Miami before your cruise?  If you arrive the day before the ship embarks, you'll have plenty of time to shop for your candles. The store can hold them for you to pick up on your way to the airport.

The reason they have a 23 kg limit on the bags is due to health and safety of the people handling the luggage. You can always bring to two bags.

You need to check the airline.  Most will allow up to 32 kg, for an extra fee.

In some cases, the extra fee for over weight is less than the fee for an extra bag.  Sometimes the extra bag is less.

No one answer fits all airlines.

I had an EMPTY water bottle confiscated  boarding a Carnival cruise - It had been all over the world without any query before that.  Not cruised with Carnival since.

Go to the shop and sniff away, find those you like then buy here?

Maybe take the list with you to make sure the ones you like are in the UK.

Are they so much cheaper in the US?

The 3-wick are $14.50 on sale right now quite a bit cheaper than the 22.99 pounds in the link.
